Keszthely combines castle history and special exhibitions with protected green spaces and waterside activities. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you are mainly looking for culture, walks or activities on Lake Balaton. The town offers a range of options, from the collections at Festetics Palace to excursion boats at the pier.
Castle history and extraordinary exhibitions
Festetics Palace was built and expanded continuously from the mid-18th century onwards and remained the property of the Festetics family for 200 years. An exhibition about the family’s former aristocratic life spans more than 20 rooms. There is also a hunting exhibition devoted to game species hunted on five continents; many animals are displayed in depictions of their natural habitats.
The Historical Model Railway Exhibition explores a very different subject: its layout includes more than 2.7 kilometres of track and more than 600 buildings across 503 square metres. Visitors can use interactive features to activate hidden scenes and take a locomotive driver’s perspective with a special camera locomotive. This means that a historical family exhibition, animal displays and an extensive model world sit side by side in the same palace complex. If you plan to visit several exhibitions, they differ considerably in their subject matter and presentation.
Townscape and cultural history
History also shapes the townscape beyond the palace. The pedestrian zone is lined with a series of listed Baroque and historicist buildings. Szigetfürdő regained its 19th-century appearance in several stages of construction in the second half of the 2000s; its interior meets modern standards.
In Helikon Park, the domed Helikon Memorial commemorates the Helikon Festivals: it was erected in 1921 to mark the festivals’ centenary and has become a landmark of Keszthely. Another small cultural site is the Biblical Garden beside the synagogue at Goldmark House. It is home to 60 plants mentioned in the Bible. The Georgikon in Keszthely was Europe’s first agricultural college and adds the history of agricultural education to the town’s range of historical themes.
Green spaces and paths to the shore of Lake Balaton
The park at Festetics Palace is a protected natural area. The Helikon Park is a separate site: at 17 hectares, it is Keszthely’s largest green space. Its main path leads straight to the shore of Lake Balaton. The size gives you an idea of the park’s extent; its path to the shore also makes it a good option if you want to combine a walk with time by the lake.
The Georgikon Botanical Garden offers another perspective on plant life. The botanical garden covers 13 hectares, is known for its exceptional biodiversity and is under local protection. Its notable collections include a fig germplasm conservation collection of the Upper Balaton region, described as unique in the region. Unlike the historic buildings and museum collections, the focus here is on the diversity of living plants.
Museums, experience farm and waterside activities
The Balatoni MĂşzeum presents approximately 10,000 exhibits across more than 700 square metres, along with interactive games and other surprises. The Georgikon MajortörtĂ©neti KiállĂtĂłhely experience farm offers a petting zoo, a play barn, a plant exhibition, a playground and a baking area. Both places combine exhibitions with interactive or hands-on elements, but each has a different focus.
Excursion boats, including the Helka, depart from Keszthely’s distinctive pier for shorter cruises. If you plan a trip, check the current timetable. Keszthely also offers sailing, sailing lessons and boat hire, including options for complete beginners; check specific dates and availability in advance.
