Balatongyörök combines views across Lake Balaton with a beach and a cycling route, as well as traces of Roman and church history. The attractions focus on different things: outdoor activities include the Pele-apó nature trail and the Balatoni Bringakörút, while viewpoints, glassworking and historic sites offer other points of interest.

Beach, Cycling Route and Access

The Balatoni Bringakörút passes through Balatongyörök and runs just a few metres from the beach entrance of Balatongyöröki Községi Strands. This makes it possible to plan a cycling route and a beach visit for the same day, even though they offer different experiences. Driving is not the only way to get there: the beach is also accessible on foot, by bicycle, train or boat. Both entrances are wheelchair-accessible, providing convenient access for people with reduced mobility and for visitors with wheelchairs or strollers. Check seasonal regulations and the latest access information before travelling.

Forest Knowledge and Glassworking

The Balaton Uplands National Park created the Pele-apó nature trail, which runs through the Keszthely Mountains near Balatongyörök. Designed especially for children, the trail has 38 stations along 8.5 kilometres. The stations cover the habitats, plants and wildlife of the region's forests.

At Kajdi Kristály, you can watch lead crystal and glass objects being worked: cutting, engraving, sandblasting, etching and polishing demonstrate different stages of the process. Contact the business in advance to ask about current visitor arrangements.

Views and History

From Szépkilátó, the view stretches across Lake Balaton, the witness hills of the Tapolca Basin and Szigliget Bay. Below the viewpoint, remains of a 2nd-century Roman villa, along with its bath and spring, were excavated at Római-forrás in the 1940s. The Roman Catholic church in Balatongyörök adds to the town's history: it was built in 1715 in honour of the Archangel Michael and rebuilt in 1745. The villa dates from the 2nd century; its remains were excavated in the 1940s.

The nature trail and Szépkilátó appeal to different interests: the trail explores forest habitats, plants and animals, while the viewpoint is all about the panorama of the lake, mountains and bay. You can choose between a nature-focused walk with several stations and a viewpoint with sweeping vistas.

Zala as a Wider Travel Region

The wider travel region of Zala offers more landscape-related attractions. The Zalai Borvidék wine region developed on the slopes and plateaus of the Zalai-dombság and on the northwestern slopes of the Keszthelyi-hegység. It comprises two wine-growing districts and 38 settlements. Kis-Balaton, Zala's largest body of water, is strictly protected and covers 14,745 hectares. It is also the setting for István Fekete's classic novels Tüskevár and Téli berek.
