Hévíz brings together the world’s largest biologically active natural thermal lake, Roman remains and wine-growing culture in the Egregy district. This offers two distinct focuses for a stay: nature at Lake Hévíz and history along the paths in Egregy. If you’re looking for a hotel in Hévíz, you can start by asking yourself how much space the lake and how much time the cultural walk should have in your trip.

Thermal Lake and Landscape

Lake Hévíz is the world’s largest biologically active natural thermal lake. Its water combines the properties of medicinal waters containing carbon dioxide, sulphur, calcium, magnesium and hydrogen carbonate. Pink and violet water lilies float on the surface. The water composition and plant life each give the area’s natural character a distinct accent.

Roman Traces and Wine-Growing in Egregy

The remains of Roman villas in Hévíz’s Egregy district were inhabited from the first half of the 1st century until the beginning of the 5th century. In the Roman Ruin Garden of Hévíz, an early imperial villa had warm, lukewarm and cold bathing pools. Egregy therefore brings together different traces of the Roman era: the long-inhabited villa remains and the villa’s bathing complex in the Ruin Garden.

The themed walking trail “Korok és borok” presents historical evidence and archaeological finds dating back to Roman times, as well as Egregy’s centuries-old wine-growing culture. It leads through picturesque vineyard scenery. Another distinctive feature of the Roman Ruin Garden is a dry Kneipp walking path. It runs over the foundations of Roman building walls preserved underground.

Routes and Getting Around

Egregy is reachable on foot from Hévíz town centre via Attila or Zrínyi Street. The distance is 1.5 kilometres; walking time is about 20–30 minutes, depending on your pace. This means you can plan the visit to the district as a walk without treating the approximate time as a fixed schedule.

An approximately 45-minute circular route is described for the Dottó train and the E-go. It includes Egregy and returns to the starting point. Check current availability and departure points before planning. A description from 2022 lists four ways to reach the Hévíz Calvary in the Egregy district: on foot, by bicycle, by car or as part of a guided walk.

Choose the Focus of Your Stay

When looking for a hotel in Hévíz, you can decide on your priorities first: should the lake take centre stage, or would you also like to plan a walk through Egregy? The approximate walking connection between the centre and Egregy provides a useful point of reference. This lets you include the cultural walk in your stay without assuming a specific route or length of day.

Regional Context: Zala

For a broader perspective, the wider destination of Zala is worth exploring. The Zalai Borvidék developed on the slopes and plateaus of the Zalai-dombság and on the northwestern slopes of the Keszthelyi-hegység. It comprises two wine-growing districts and 38 settlements. The Egregy themed trail covers the district’s wine-growing culture; information about the Zalai Borvidék provides a regional perspective. These two scales help distinguish local history from the wider wine-growing landscape.
