Two distinct themes take centre stage in Pénzesgyőr: a geological nature trail between two locations and an educational centre with a farm showcasing chemical-free farming and horticulture. The Judit Spring adds a connection to the surrounding landscape. When planning your trip, you can choose between a route exploring geological features and insights into different cultivation methods.
Geological features along a route
The 12-kilometre Geológiai Tanösvény (Geological Nature Trail) connects Pénzesgyőr and Hárskút. You can walk or cycle along it. The route passes geological features of the northern Bakony. The nature trail was created and is maintained by the PANGEA Cultural and Environmental Association. Its length and the two endpoints provide a clear framework for the tour; the focus along the way is the region’s geology. If you plan to follow the trail, check the current trail conditions beforehand.
Educational centre and horticulture
The Pénzesgyőr Educational Centre includes a 7-hectare farm showcasing the values of chemical-free farming. It includes a garden of medicinal and culinary herbs. The farm also has a demonstration vegetable garden that incorporates and illustrates companion planting. The two gardens show different aspects of the subject: medicinal and culinary herbs on the one hand, and the interaction between different crops in the vegetable garden on the other. Access to the farm must be arranged with the association.
A point of reference nearby
The Judit Spring rises between Bakonybél and Pénzesgyőr, near the Szömörke Valley. Its location nearby adds to the points of reference around Pénzesgyőr. Both towns and the nearby valley are useful landmarks for orientation.
Distinctive attractions in the broader Balaton - North destination
The broader Balaton - North destination encompasses a range of natural and cultural attractions. Hegyestű is a 337-metre-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló. There, the interior of a basalt volcano that was active around 8 million years ago is exposed. A panoramic information board at a viewpoint on the western edge of the quarry helps visitors identify the surrounding hills. A rock garden displays characteristic rock types from Transdanubia, the western half of Hungary. Badacsony offers another geological highlight: the volcanic mountain has hiking trails and panoramic views, and its distinctive formations are known as basalt organ pipes. Special grape varieties are also grown on its slopes and used to make Badacsony wine.
The Tapolca Cave Lake also combines natural attractions with a specific visitor experience: boat rides are offered there, along with the guided exhibition “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town that has been explored to a length of 14.6 kilometres. In Bakonybél, the Pannon Csillagda presents an interactive exhibition on spaceflight and astronomy. Szent Mauríciusz Monostor originated as a monastery founded in 1018 by King Stephen I, at the suggestion of the monk Günther, in the area of present-day Bakonybél.
Craftsmanship and education are central at other locations. The Herend Porcelain Museum features a permanent exhibition and temporary exhibitions on the history of the manufactory. The visitor centre presents porcelain making, techniques and applied-art traditions; in workshops, visitors can handle porcelain clay and a brush for painting. The Levendula Ház in Tihany explores the formation of the Tihany Peninsula and lavender cultivation in an interactive exhibition. It also has a craft workshop and a sensory garden.
For outdoor activities, the 230-hectare Ámos-hegyi Pihenőerdő offers a nature trail, a lookout tower, a fitness trail and forest playgrounds. In Eplény, SkiArena Vibe Park has 16 ski runs with a total trail system measuring 7,984 metres; the Ámos-hegyi viewpoint looks out over the high Bakony landscape. These regional attractions are clearly distinct from Pénzesgyőr’s local highlights and can complement your plans if you want to explore beyond the town.
