A 50-metre-high viaduct over the Séd stream and a castle on Várhegy hill give Veszprém two very different landmarks. The city also has lookout towers, a route along the stream and recurring cultural events. When planning your trip, it is worth considering whether you would like to focus on historic sites, outdoor activities or an event in the calendar.
Castle, Heights and City History
Veszprém Castle was built in the 10th to 11th century on Várhegy, a hill in the city. A wall from the former fortifications runs along the edge of the steep slopes; historic buildings now stand within the site. The castle area thus brings together the period of the city’s origins, its former fortifications and historic buildings, offering different points of connection with the city’s history. Szent Benedek-hegy is considered to be the burial place of the ancestors who settled the land, adding another historic site to this picture.
The Tűztorony has a different history: originally intended as a watchtower, it was later converted for fire surveillance. A spiral staircase leads to a circular balcony with views over Veszprém’s districts. The Szent István völgyhíd, also known as the Viaduct, spans Fejes-völgy above the Séd stream and is 50 metres high. The castle, tower and bridge each add a distinctive feature to Veszprém’s cityscape.
Views and Outdoor Routes
The Gizella királyné kilátó is located in Gulya-dombi Parkerdő, was built entirely from scratch and is 22 metres high. From the upper parking lot of Veszprémi Állatkert, it takes about ten minutes to walk to the lookout tower. For your planning, note that this approximate walking time starts from that specific point.
Kolostorok és Kertek offers a different way to explore: the more than three-kilometre hiking and cycling route follows the Séd stream through a well-maintained public park. The two options differ in their format: one is a specified walking route from a particular parking lot to a lookout point, while the other is a longer route along the stream. This lets you choose between a single destination and a route through the park when planning your day.
Cultural Events Throughout the Year
Veszprémi Utcazene Fesztivál takes place every July. Street musicians from Hungary and abroad perform on small or improvised stages in the city centre. VeszprémFest is also a regular fixture in the city’s July programme; it is a recurring music festival. The two events each have their own character: performances in the city streets define the atmosphere of Utcazene Fesztivál, while VeszprémFest is established as a music festival in the July programme.
Gizella Napok takes place every May. The programme includes a historical procession, concerts, exhibitions and theatre performances. Event programmes vary. So check the dates and programme before your trip if you want to plan a festival visit in advance.
Exhibitions and Other Places to Visit
Víziközmű Múzeum és Kiállítóterem commemorates Veszprém’s drinking water supply, which has been in place for 120 years, and features a themed exhibition on water management. Advance registration is required for a visit. Check the visiting arrangements in advance before adding the museum to your plans.
Veszprémvölgy is home to Magyar Népmesék játszókert and Rézsűs játszótér. If playgrounds are relevant to your trip planning, you can include these two named sites as separate stops. Together with the historic sites, museum and viewpoints, they offer a range of different options, so you do not have to plan every visit as the same kind of attraction.
