A Székely Gate made by carpenters from Tusnád stands in front of the Nemesvámos Town Hall. Roman heritage can be seen at the Baláca villa estate: its surviving buildings include valuable finds, a garden of spices and medicinal herbs, and an ancient-style sundial. There are also offerings that vary by season. If you are looking for a hotel in Nemesvámos, this variety can help you decide whether archaeology, activities in the town or other cultural themes in the wider Balaton North destination are most important for your trip.
Culture in Nemesvámos: the Székely Gate and Baláca
The Székely Gate stands directly in front of the Nemesvámos Municipal Office. It was made by carpenters from Tusnád. The Baláca villa estate is located in Balácapuszta, on the border between Nemesvámos and Veszprémfajsz. Its surviving buildings include valuable finds, a garden of spices and medicinal herbs, and an ancient-style sundial. In the park, visitors can learn about the spices and medicinal herbs of Roman times, as well as everyday life back then. The theme therefore ranges from plants to insights into Roman daily life.
Crafts and seasonal activities
Food production is also among the local themes: at the Tekeresvölgyi farm in Nemesvámos, all cheeses are made by hand. The range of farm products may change.
Activities vary by season. Pig slaughters are regularly held in Nemesvámos in winter. In the other seasons, visitors can take part in wine tours. They can also join in baking bread and langalló. If you would like to plan one of these activities, check the specific dates in advance.
Other cultural and nature themes in the wider Balaton North destination
The wider Balaton North destination offers additional themes of a different kind. Boat trips are available in the Tapolcai-tavasbarlang, along with a guided exhibition entitled “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of an underground cave system beneath the town, which has so far been explored for a length of 14.6 kilometres. Here, visitor activities are combined with a geological explanation of the underground system.
Hegyestű is a 337-metre-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló. It exposes the inside of a basalt volcano that was active about eight million years ago. At a viewpoint on the western edge of the quarry site, visitors can use a panoramic information board to identify the surrounding hills. Hegyestű also has a rock garden featuring characteristic rock types from Transdanubia. The site therefore offers both a geological focus and a guide to the surrounding landscape.
Porcelain production and its history are at the heart of Herend. The Herend Porcelain Museum has a permanent exhibition and changing exhibitions on the history of the manufactory. The visitor centre introduces the production of porcelain, the related techniques and the traditions of applied arts. In workshops at the Minimanufactory, visitors can handle porcelain clay and a brush for painting. This cultural theme is therefore distinct from Baláca: one is about Roman daily life, the other about porcelain craftsmanship and applied arts.
