A lookout tower is within walking distance of Hárskút, and a circular trail also passes several points of interest. You can choose between visiting a single viewpoint and taking a circular route with cultural and natural highlights.
Lookout Towers and Views of the Bakony
The 20 m-high Vitéz Bertalan Árpád kilátó lookout tower on Papod-hegy can be reached from Hárskút with a walk. There is a rest area at the summit. From the top level, the view stretches across the forests of the Bakony.
Another nearby viewpoint is the Fekete István kilátó lookout tower on 486 m-high Kis-Bükk, between Hárskút and Márkó. The 19.56 m-high tower opened in 2014. From its top level, you can see, among other things, the mountains of the Southern Bakony, as well as Miklós-Pál-hegy, Kab-hegy, Som-hegy and Kőris-hegy. Small signs on the railing help you identify the surrounding settlements. There is a small car park beside the road between Hárskút and Márkó; the Kis-Bükk tanösvény trail, which is connected to the lookout tower, also starts there.
The two towers offer different perspectives: at the Vitéz Bertalan Árpád kilátó, the focus is on views across the Bakony forests. At the Fekete István kilátó, information signs complement the views of the surrounding mountains and settlements.
The Hárskúti keresztkör circular trail
The Hárskúti keresztkör circular trail passes, among other places, the village museum, the First World War memorial, the Cholnoky víznyelő karst sinkhole and the Esztergáli-forrás spring. The Catholic church is also on the route, which returns to its starting point. The loop therefore combines cultural stops with geological and landscape features. Those who want to discover several aspects of Hárskút on a walk will find this a different way to explore than visiting a single lookout tower.
More nature and culture in the broader Lake Balaton - North destination
In the broader Lake Balaton - North destination, Hegyestű offers a chance to explore a geological landscape. The 337 m-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló exposes the inner side of a basalt volcano that was active around 8 million years ago. At the viewpoint on the western edge of the quarry site, visitors can use a panorama board to identify the surrounding hills. Hegyestű also features a rock garden with characteristic rock types from Transdanubia. Here, views of the landscape meet insights into its geology.
Another attraction in the broader Lake Balaton - North destination is the Tapolcai-tavasbarlang. Boat rides are offered there, as well as the guided exhibition “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town that has been explored to a length of 14.6 km so far. Boat rides and the exhibition offer two different ways to experience karst: a journey on the water and a guided introduction to the subject.
In the broader Lake Balaton - North destination, Herend adds porcelain culture to the nature attractions. The Herend Porcelain Museum presents a permanent exhibition and changing exhibitions on the history of the manufactory. The visitor centre explains porcelain production, the associated techniques and the traditions of applied arts. In workshops, visitors can handle porcelain paste and a brush for painting. The museum, visitor centre and workshops each have a different focus: history, knowledge of the manufacturing process and hands-on work with the materials.
