Elderberry culture and sacred history give Jásd a clear cultural focus. A striking landscape feature lies nearby. When planning your stay, it helps to distinguish these local themes from other discoveries in the broader Balaton - North destination.

Elderberries and sacred history in Jásd

Bodzaház serves as a tourist information center in Jásd. Its interactive permanent exhibition presents the many uses of elderberries and their connection to the people of Jásd. The Way of the Crosses and Sacred Memorials also starts at Bodzaház. This place therefore combines an exhibition on a local theme with the named starting point of a route.

The parish church of Szűz Mária, a Világ Királynéja stands in the center of the village, between the diverging branches of the main road, in an enclosed churchyard. The history of this site includes a medieval Benedictine abbey dedicated to Saint George, which stood on the site of the present-day parish church. The church and the history of the monastery are thus two aspects of the same site from different periods.

Another sacred site in Jásd lies beside the Szentkút spring: a pilgrimage site is located there. Together with the parish church and the Way of the Crosses, it offers a distinct way to explore the village’s religious themes, without requiring these places to be combined into a single route.

Landscape nearby

The Római-fürdő lies between Bakonynána and Jásd. There, the Gaja cuts through the terrain; the site is one of the most striking spots in the gorge-filled Bakony. This landscape feature adds a distinct perspective on the surroundings to Jásd’s cultural themes. Its location is clear: the Római-fürdő lies between the two named settlements.

More to explore in the broader Balaton - North destination

In the broader Balaton - North destination, the Tapolcai-tavasbarlang offers a different focus. Boat trips are available there, as is the guided exhibition “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town that has so far been explored over a length of 14.6 kilometers. This brings together a guided exhibition, boat trips and the geological dimension of the cave system.

Hegyestű also offers a regional perspective: the 337-meter-high mountain lies between Zánka and Monoszló. It exposes the inner side of a basalt volcano that was active about 8 million years ago. At the viewpoint on the western edge of the quarry grounds, visitors can identify the surrounding hills with the help of a panorama board. A rock garden featuring characteristic rock types from Transdanubia adds to the geological focus. Here, landforms, orientation and rocks can be explored as distinct themes.

Herend offers further points of interest in craftsmanship and the history of production. The Herend Porcelain Museum features a permanent exhibition and rotating exhibitions on the history of the manufactory. The visitor center presents porcelain production, its techniques and the traditions of applied arts. In workshops at the Minimanufaktúra, visitors can handle porcelain clay and a brush for painting. Alongside Jásd’s local themes, caves, geology and porcelain are distinct areas of interest in the broader Balaton - North destination.
