Nemesgulacs lies at the western foot of Gulács. The 393-meter-high basalt mountain dominates the local landscape and provides a clear landmark for planning hikes. At the same time, the parish church, the Eőry-kúria, and the local wine offerings give you different reasons to explore the village beyond a summit hike. When choosing accommodation, you can weigh your priorities: hiking, local history, or wine.
Hiking Trails on Gulács
A green hiking trail leads from the center of Nemesgulacs to the summit of Gulács; the footpath is narrow and spiral-shaped, and only wide enough for one person. If you are considering the summit trail, take this route into account when planning. In addition, regional yellow and blue hiking trails pass through the village. The trails that pass through Nemesgulacs lead to Sér-kút, a spring on the mountainside.
The protected-area designation is also geographically specific: the outlying area of Nemesgulacs is part of the Balaton Uplands National Park. You can therefore consider the mountain and its summit trail, and the hiking trails through the village, as distinct aspects of the landscape. In the broader Lake Balaton – North destination area, Hegyestű provides an additional point of geological comparison: The 337-meter-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló exposes the inside of a basalt volcano that was active about eight million years ago.
Church and Local History
The Roman Catholic parish church was rebuilt from ruins in 1725 and reconstructed between 1845 and 1850. Its exterior features classicist elements, while the interior is late Baroque; the tower was added in 1853. Its construction history therefore comprises several clearly distinct phases. Marble plaques on the walls commemorate those who fell in the First and Second World Wars. In 1989, the first Mindszenty memorial in the country was unveiled in the church garden.
The Eőry-kúria stands in the center and houses a school. The building is also connected to the life of writer Dezső Keresztury, who spent his childhood and youth there. Along with the parish church’s construction phases and memorials, this connection provides another historical point of interest in Nemesgulacs.
