Kapolcs offers a specific cultural point of interest: the MűvészVölgy Kúria is located in the center of the town and presents cultural, artistic and scientific programs, as well as interactive exhibitions. Individual programs vary. If a particular offering is important to you, factor the relevant program into your plans.

Culture and E-Bikes in Kapolcs

The MűvészVölgy Kúria’s side building houses a cycle tourism center that offers tour options with high-quality electric bikes. This means Kapolcs caters to two different interests: culture and exhibitions on the one hand, and e-bike tours on the other. Current tour arrangements may vary; if a tour is important to your stay, check the specific options in advance.

When choosing accommodation, it can help to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: would you mainly like to plan around the Kúria’s offerings, or are you also interested in the e-bike tour option? This way, your search reflects the kind of stay you want, rather than an assumed program or tour schedule.

More to Explore in the Broader North Balaton Destination

The broader North Balaton destination adds other distinct landscape, geology and cultural topics to the picture of Kapolcs. The following attractions are part of this regional setting.

Caves and Volcanic Landscapes

Boat rides are offered in Tapolcai-tavasbarlang, and there is also a guided exhibition called “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of an underground cave system beneath the town that has been explored to a length of 14.6 kilometers. This length refers to the cave system; the visitor activities mentioned are boat rides and the guided exhibition.

Hegyestű lies between Zánka and Monoszló and is 337 meters high. The inner side of a basalt volcano that was active about 8 million years ago is exposed on the mountain. At the western edge of the quarry grounds, visitors can use a panoramic board to identify the surrounding hills. Hegyestű also has a rock garden featuring characteristic rock types from Transdanubia, the western half of Hungary. The focus here is on geological formation, terrain and finding one’s bearings in the landscape.

Badacsony also offers a distinct perspective on landscape and geology: the volcanic mountain has hiking trails and panoramic views for hikers. Its distinctive formations are known as basalt organ pipes. Special grapes are also grown on its slopes and used to make Badacsony wine.

Exhibitions, Crafts and History

In Herend, the Herend Porcelain Museum presents a permanent exhibition and changing exhibitions on the history of the manufactory. The visitor center introduces porcelain-making, the associated techniques and the traditions of applied arts. In workshops at the mini-manufactory, visitors can handle porcelain clay and a brush for painting. This offers two different ways to engage with the subject: visiting the exhibition and taking part in a hands-on activity.

For another cultural perspective, the Pannon Csillagda in Bakonybél has an interactive exhibition on space travel and astronomy. Also in Bakonybél is Szent Mauríciusz Monostor, which traces its origins to a monastery that King Stephen I had built in 1018, at the suggestion of the monk Günther, in the area of present-day Bakonybél. The exhibition at the Csillagda and the history of the monastery offer different points of focus within the broader destination.
