Sümegprága combines a distinctive river geography with festivals, public artworks and local products. The Marcal rises near Sümegprága on the northeastern slope of the Keszthelyi Mountains. The town also hosts an annual pottery gathering at Csernely Hill at Pentecost. Together, these themes offer various starting points for planning a stay.
The Marcal, Festivals and Public Art
The Marcal rises near Sümegprága on the northeastern slope of the Keszthelyi Mountains and flows into the Rába at Koroncó. Its geographical description thus runs from the source area near the town to a clearly named point on the Rába. There is also a striking artwork on the banks of the Marcal: a large wooden statue of Saint Florian, carved from wood, stands there. It is about 500 metres from the church.
Another public monument is the statue of Saint Stephen, created by Ottó Frech. It was unveiled in Sümegprága in 2000, after the festive Mass on 20 August. The two statues make different impressions: the Florian monument is defined by its woodcarving and location on the Marcal, while the historical unveiling after the festive Mass is a specific point of reference for the Saint Stephen monument.
The Fazekas-találkozó, or pottery gathering, is held annually at Pentecost on Csernely Hill, on the outskirts of Sümegprága. A village festival takes place in town in July, and a grape harvest festival is held in autumn. If you want to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the date of the specific edition. This lets you tailor your plans to your interests without conflating the different times of year when the events take place.
Local Products and Their Connections
Sümegprága is known for its sweet chestnuts. Another local speciality is the Otelló grape: it is used to colour wine, and is now also used to make fruit juice. The local products thus range from the well-known sweet chestnut to a grape that plays a role in both winemaking and juice production. This adds a concrete look at local produce to the themes of festivals and art.
Further Themes in the Wider Balaton - North Destination
Travellers who also explore other themes in the wider Balaton - North destination will find distinct highlights there. Boat trips are offered in the Tapolca Lake Cave, and there is also a guided exhibition called “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town, of which 14.6 kilometres have been explored so far. Here, a specific visitor experience goes hand in hand with the scale of the underground system.
Hegyestű offers a different geological perspective. It is a 337-metre-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló. There, the inside of a basalt volcano that was active about eight million years ago has been exposed. At the western edge of the quarry site, visitors can use a panoramic information board to identify the surrounding hills. Hegyestű also has a rock garden featuring characteristic rock types from Transdanubia, the western half of Hungary. Volcanic rock, orientation in the landscape and geological diversity are therefore the focus here.
In the wider Balaton - North destination, Herend also offers different ways to explore crafts and porcelain. The Herend Porcelain Museum features a permanent exhibition and changing exhibitions on the history of the manufactory. In workshops at the Minimanufaktúra, visitors can handle porcelain paste and a brush for painting. The visitor centre also explains porcelain production, the associated techniques and the traditions of applied arts.
Sümeg Castle in the wider Balaton - North destination offers another historical highlight: it is a relatively well-preserved medieval fortress on a bare hill that rises above the surrounding area. An interactive exhibition opened there in spring 2023, and extensive renovation work was completed in 2022. The themes of the wider destination can therefore be clearly distinguished: karst and cave systems, volcanic landscapes, porcelain art or a medieval fortress.
