A local dish and a broader selection of regional themes give you two different starting points for planning your trip to Csabrendek. Csab-tócsi offers a specific culinary connection to the town; in the wider Lake Balaton - North destination, caves, landscapes, culture and other activities add more possibilities. When looking for suitable accommodation, you can first decide which themes matter most for your trip.
Csabrendek and Csab-tócsi
Csab-tócsi is made with sausage, onions, bacon, garlic and paprika, and served with garlic sour cream. The dish combines several robust ingredients, with garlic featuring both in the preparation and as a side. It is a tangible starting point for getting to know the local area: if you are interested in the cuisine, Csab-tócsi is a specific dish associated with Csabrendek. This does not indicate a restaurant address or a particular place where it is served.
In the wider Lake Balaton - North destination
The region’s themes range from underground geology to landscapes and crafts, as well as cultural and recreational activities. When choosing, it helps to consider your interests: would you like to explore a cave and its exhibition, see geological formations outdoors, or learn about history and applied arts?
Caves and geological landscapes
Boat rides are available in the Tapolcai-tavasbarlang, which also has a guided exhibition, “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town that has so far been explored over a length of 14.6 kilometres. The boat ride, exhibition and scale of the cave system offer different ways to explore the subject of karst.
Hegyestű is a 337-metre-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló. The inner side of a basalt volcano that was active around eight million years ago is exposed here. At a viewpoint on the western edge of the quarry grounds, visitors can identify the surrounding hills using a panorama board. A rock garden adds characteristic rock types from Transdanubia, the western half of Hungary, to the landscape experience. Badacsony, meanwhile, offers hiking trails and panoramic views for walkers; its distinctive geological formations are known as basalt organ pipes.
Culture, crafts and history
In Herend, the Porcelain Museum features a permanent exhibition and changing exhibitions on the history of the manufactory. The visitor centre introduces the process of making porcelain, the techniques involved and the traditions of applied arts. In workshops, visitors can handle porcelain clay and a brush for painting. The exhibition, background information and hands-on activities offer different ways to explore the material.
Sümeg Castle is a relatively well-preserved medieval fortress on a bare hill that rises above its surroundings. Extensive renovation work was completed in 2022, and an interactive exhibition opened there in spring 2023. Another historical perspective is offered by Szent Mauríciusz Monostor: it traces its origins to a monastery founded in 1018 by King Stephen I, at the suggestion of the monk Günther, in the area of present-day Bakonybél.
More themes for different interests
In Bakonybél, the interactive exhibition at Pannon Csillagda brings together space exploration and astronomy. Levendula Ház also uses interactive displays to present the formation of the Tihany Peninsula and lavender cultivation; it also has a craft workshop and a garden with activities. If nature and exercise are more your focus when planning a trip, the 230-hectare Ámos-hegyi Pihenőerdő has a nature trail, an observation tower, an outdoor fitness trail and forest playgrounds. The ski trail system at SkiArena Vibe Park in Eplény comprises 16 runs with a total length of 7,984 metres.
The attractions at Veszprém Zoo have their own distinctive appeal: the zoo offers experiences across six continents year-round and welcomes visitors of all ages. The Dinosaur Park features lifelike dinosaur models; children can also take part in a real archaeological excavation there. Badacsony’s landscape also has a culinary aspect: distinctive grapes are grown on its slopes and used to make Badacsony wine. This makes it possible to explore the regional themes according to your interests without confusing them with the local dish from Csabrendek.
First consider whether local cuisine, geology, culture or outdoor activities are your main priority.
