Marcalgergelyi can be explored through two very different topics: the leisure park at Joó Lake and the architectural history of the Protestant Church. The lakeside park combines beach and sports areas with rental facilities; the village’s history can be traced through the church’s construction date, tower and dedication.
Joó Lake: beach and activities
At the beach at Marcalgergelyi’s Joó Lake, free sun loungers and parasols, Wi-Fi, showers and changing rooms are available. Sandy courts add opportunities for volleyball, football and handball. This makes it possible to enjoy both relaxing time at the beach and sports activities, each as a distinct option.
Equipped bicycles can be rented at Marcalgergelyi’s Joó Lake; rental is free for overnight guests. For specific planning, it is advisable to check the leisure park’s current opening hours and conditions of use.
The Protestant Church and the Tájház project
The Protestant Church in Marcalgergelyi was originally built in 1783 without a tower or bell. The church’s tower is 48 metres high and is among the tallest in the surrounding area. It was dedicated on 18 December 1910. The year 1783 refers to the original construction; 18 December 1910 is the dedication date, while 48 metres is the height of the tower.
Another historical point of interest is the Tájház project. On 27 September 2014, Illés Ferenc offered his parental home to the municipality for the establishment of a Tájház. The municipality accepted the gift for this purpose and undertook the long-term preservation and development of the house. The offer, its acceptance and the commitment to preservation are the key stages in this story.
More discoveries in the wider destination of Northern Lake Balaton
In the wider destination of Northern Lake Balaton, the Tapolca Lake Cave offers a different focus. Boat trips are available there, as well as a guided exhibition, “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town of Tapolca that has so far been explored over a length of 14.6 kilometres. The boat trip and exhibition offer different ways to experience karst: a boat ride in the cave and a guided thematic presentation.
Hegyestű, also in the wider destination of Northern Lake Balaton, offers another geological perspective. The mountain is 337 metres high and lies between Zánka and Monoszló. Hegyestű exposes the interior of a basalt volcano that was active around eight million years ago. At the viewpoint on the western edge of the quarry grounds, visitors can identify the surrounding hills with the help of a panorama board. Hegyestű also has a rock garden featuring characteristic rock types of Transdanubia, the western half of Hungary. This offers different ways to explore the mountain’s geological formation, the surrounding landscape and the diversity of its rocks. In Bakonybél, the Pannon Csillagda features an interactive exhibition on space exploration and astronomy.
