Balatonfüzfö offers several different ways to enjoy a trip: astronomy, church history, swimming and active pursuits. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether you would prefer to spend your time on culture and stargazing or on exercise and water activities. The options also differ in what needs to be arranged in advance: visits to the observatory dome require a phone appointment, while access and arrangements for fishing activities should be checked before your visit.
Astronomy in two different formats
At the Balaton Csillagvizsgáló in Balatonfűzfő, astronomy experts guide visitors through observations in the dome. Visits must be arranged in advance by phone. Another astronomy option is the virtual planet tour “Kozmikus utazás” at the Balaton Csillagvizsgáló Tudományos és Kulturális Központ. It is offered for 2,500 Ft per person. This gives you a choice of two different experiences: a guided observation in the dome and a virtual planet tour. Arrange your dome visit well in advance; for the planet tour, it is worth checking the current program.
Church history and a swimming pool with clearly specified dimensions
The Roman Catholic Jézus Szíve Parish Church was consecrated in 1936 by Bishop Rott Nándor. Another historical trace is the ruin of the Máma Church: it was excavated and restored in 1963 and 1964 under the direction of the state heritage protection authority. The parish church and the ruin thus offer different points of interest for a culture-focused stay.
If you want to include swimming in your plans, the Balaton Uszoda has a 50-metre-long, two-metre-deep main pool with a tensioned water surface. It is suitable for swimming and fin-swimming competitions, water polo games and synchronised swimming performances, among other activities. Check the facility’s current operating status before visiting.
Bobsled tracks, climbing, fishing and sailing camps
The BalatoniBob Szabadidőpark has two bobsled tracks. The Serpa Kalandpark offers climbing and archery, as well as adventure courses of varying difficulty. The activities differ in their nature: the focus on the bobsled tracks is on the ride, while at the Serpa Kalandpark visitors can choose between climbing, archery and adventure courses.
The Balatonfűzfői Horgász Egyesület offers opportunities for shore fishing on Lake Balaton, and especially for fishing from a boat. If you plan to take part, check access and make the necessary arrangements in advance. From June to August, the BS-Fűzfő Vitorlás Klub offers summer sailing camps with lessons for beginners and advanced sailors on Optimist and Hartley boats. The camps are available as overnight or day camps. Check current availability for your preferred dates.
More ideas in the wider destination of Northern Balaton
The wider destination of Northern Balaton also has distinctive cultural and natural attractions. Boat trips are offered in the Tapolcai-tavasbarlang, which also has the guided exhibition “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). Hegyestű is a 337-metre-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló. Its inner face reveals part of a basalt volcano that was active about 8 million years ago. From the lookout point on the western edge of the quarry grounds, visitors can identify the surrounding hills using a panorama board. These regional attractions differ from the astronomy, history and active pursuits on offer in Balatonfüzfö.
