Városlőd combines traces of its Carthusian history with the varied programme at Iglauer Park. Special details include lines of a medieval cloister depicted in the ground, a monastery tradition associated with the Érdy Codex, and the history of local majolica. Alongside activities, the park also focuses on local heritage topics.

Monastery, Church and Ceramics

The Carthusian monastery in Városlőd had a library building and workshops for copying and binding codices. The Carthusian Anonymous is also associated with the monastery: in a monastic cell, he wrote a work preserved in the Lövöldi or Érdy Codex. These details give the monastery’s history both a craft-related and a written dimension.

On the square south of the church, parts of the medieval monastery cloister are depicted in the ground: the floor plan of the west wing, a small part of the east wing’s junction, and a cloister wall running parallel to the church’s south wall. The depiction makes individual structural elements of the complex easier to understand without requiring a complete cloister plan.

The Iglauer Park local heritage tour includes an introduction to the Roman Catholic Church of St. Michael. At the northern edge of the village lies the mysterious Árpád-era Hölgykő Castle, on a wooded promontory. It is another historical landmark in Városlőd.

Városlőd majolica is also part of local history: painted with Hungarian motifs on a white glaze, it developed a style that became a model for the ceramics industry. The factory no longer exists. The ÁMK Német Nemzetiségi Tájház, also known as the Waschludt Local History Museum, displays the furnishings of a rural farmhouse from around the turn of the century. These include furniture for the living room and kitchen, as well as household items.

Activities at Iglauer Park

Iglauer Park offers organised and independent tours, cycling, archery, fishing and craft activities. Guests who are not staying at the park can also take part in its programmes. Archery is among the activities offered; if you plan to try it, check the current arrangements directly with the park.

A hike to natural attractions in the area around Városlőd is another programme option at the park. Contact the park directly for current dates if you would like to include the tour in your plans. This allows you to distinguish the village’s local heritage topics from a nature-focused activity, without assuming that both involve the same kind of outing.

Other topics in the broader Lake Balaton – North destination

Tapolcai-tavasbarlang is also part of the broader Lake Balaton – North destination. Boat trips are offered there, as well as the guided “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”) exhibition. The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town of Tapolca, which has been explored to a length of 14.6 kilometres so far.

Another topic in the broader Lake Balaton – North destination is Hegyestű, a 337-metre-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló. There, the inner side of a basalt volcano that was active around eight million years ago reveals the rock structure. At the western edge of the quarry site, visitors can identify the surrounding hills from a viewpoint with the help of a panorama board. These regional attractions stand on their own and should be distinguished from Városlőd’s monastery, village and park offerings.

When choosing what to visit, you can prioritise Városlőd’s attractions according to your interests: the monastery tradition, church, castle and majolica each offer different perspectives on the village’s history, while Iglauer Park offers a different focus, with activities and tours. If a particular park programme is important to your stay, ask the park directly about the current arrangements.
