Úrkút brings together two distinct travel interests: the Úrkúti-őskarszt, with its series of sinkholes, and local history, marked by traces of the former glassworks.

Karst Landscape and Educational Trails

The Csárdahegyi Nature Reserve lies on the eastern edge of Úrkút’s built-up area. The Úrkút Geological Nature Reserve covers 2.2 hectares and was placed under protection in 1953.

The Országos Kék hiking trail runs through the Úrkúti-őskarszt area. An educational trail explores the distinctive series of sinkholes and their surroundings. Another educational trail leads from Úrkút to Kislőd. The routes offer different perspectives: the hiking trail passes through the area, the sinkhole trail focuses on the landforms, and the route to Kislőd leads to another destination. Check locally on the current condition of the sinkhole trail and the signage on the route to Kislőd.

Glassworks, Church, and Village Museum

The Nagyboldogasszony Church was built by workers from the local glassworks by 1795. A glass chandelier made at the local glassworks can still be seen there. The church thus brings together two aspects of the glassworks’ history: the work of its builders up to 1795 and a glass object of local manufacture that remains visible today.

A 2016 municipal visitor information page describes the Úrkút Village Museum as exhibiting household objects and traditional costumes that illustrate the former daily life of the local population. It mentions arranging visits by phone; knowledgeable guides can be provided. Check the current museum status and arrangements before your trip. While the glass chandelier in the church is evidence of local production, the museum focuses on everyday objects and traditional costumes.

Cultural Traditions and Local History

The German Nationality Self-Government of Úrkút has held a Nationality Day every year since its founding. The Úrkút Asszonykórus preserves the local Swabian song tradition. Thus, an annual event and the preservation of musical traditions go hand in hand. If you would like to plan your trip around Nationality Day, check the current dates.

The Gubicza-hegyi Cross stands at the site designated in 1783 for Úrkút’s first cemetery and has been restored several times. The garden of the Zichy-Schaller kúria is classified as a historic garden. Remains of the former Ajka–Csingervölgy railway line are also still visible; check locally which sections are open to the public. Úrkút brings together different aspects of local history: the site of the former cemetery, a historic garden, and visible traces of the former railway line.

Getting There and Regional Orientation

For visitors traveling to Úrkút by public transport, the archived municipal visitor information lists Volán bus services. Check the current timetables before departure.

In the wider Balaton - North travel destination, Tapolcai-tavasbarlang offers a different way to experience karst: boat trips are available there, as well as a guided exhibition titled Csodálatos karszt (Wonderful Karst). Compared with Úrkút’s karst and educational trail themes, the focus there is on boat trips and a guided exhibition. Those interested in experiencing karst in different ways can choose between educational trails and an offering that combines a boat trip with a guided tour.
