Koppányszántó combines a gently rolling landscape with a neoclassical Apostles’ Church, a building-like tomb and the Koppánymenti Meadows. Architectural history, remembrance, and animal and plant life offer different ways to explore the place.

River Setting and Landscape

The larger part of the settlement lies north of the Koppány River, with a smaller part to its south. The landscape is gently rolling. The river setting and the relief therefore describe two distinct features: the settlement’s position on both sides of the river and the gently undulating terrain.

Church Architecture and Religious Motifs

The Szent Bertalan-apostol Church is a simple neoclassical building dating from 1753, extended with a side aisle in 1908. Its architectural features include a projecting section on one side and a bell tower at the main entrance. Loosely arranged deciduous trees surround the church. It is dedicated to one of the twelve apostles. Its year of construction, later extension and dedication offer different points of entry into architectural and religious history.

The Szentháromság mosaic depicts the Holy Trinity on a broad stone-built column. It complements the Apostles’ Church with a different form of religious representation: here, the focus is on the mosaic image on its stone support, not the architecture of a church building.

Tomb and Natural Environment

The Kammerer Ernő tomb adds a different architectural and commemorative dimension. The small, building-like tomb is designed in the style of organic architecture. It was erected in 1920 to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Kammerer Ernő, who was the first director of the Szépművészeti Múzeum. The tomb’s history as a memorial and the church’s architectural history can thus be viewed as two distinct historical strands.

The Koppánymenti Meadows border Koppányszántó to the southeast. Eurasian otters, European pond turtles, Danube crested newts and European fire-bellied toads live there; black alders and common ash trees also grow there. The species list includes mammals, reptiles and amphibians, as well as two tree species. Sightings of the animals mentioned are not guaranteed.

A Named Route

The “Koppány kör” route in the Koppányvölgy Nature Park lists Koppányszántó as one of its stops. If you include the tour in your plans, check the route conditions before setting out.
