Hőgyész combines cultural history with a landscape of hills, valleys, forests and fishponds. Two highlights are ideal for exploring: religious buildings and the German collection on the one hand, and nature and rural tourism on the other. This lets you decide whether to focus mainly on history or outdoor activities before choosing your accommodation.
Landscape and Nature Activities
Hőgyész lies in the southern part of the Tolnai-Hegyhát, next to the Kapos Valley and in the valley of the Donát Stream. Hills, valleys, forests and fishponds shape the landscape. The Apponyi area offers nature and excursions, including a park forest, a viewpoint and a tourist trail. If you plan to take the trail, check its current markings and access conditions in advance.
Collection and Local History
The Hőgyész German Nationality Collection’s local heritage house consists of four rooms: three exhibition rooms and a pantry. The pantry contains agricultural equipment as well as some tools and utensils used in crafts. Original objects and furniture that were once in use are also on display. Mannequins wear historical German costumes from Hőgyész, Kalaznó, Dúzs, Diósberény and Murga. Visits are possible by prior registration and appointment, so arrange your visit before travelling.
Churches and Pilgrimage History
The present-day Holy Cross Church in Hőgyész was completed by 1799 with donations from Count Antal Apponyi and local community members. Another sacred site is the Csicsói Pilgrimage Church and Holy Well, a pilgrimage site belonging to the Hőgyész parish. The landowner Anton Mercy d’Argenteau had it built in 1745 in honour of the Holy Trinity and Our Lady of Help. The Csicsó Chapel serves as the burial place of its builder, Anton Mercy. If you plan to visit the pilgrimage site, check the current access conditions.
Wine and Rural Tourism
The Csicsó wine cellars are a stop on the Tolna Wine Route. Their operators offer visitors wines from the vineyards on the slopes. Check in advance which tastings are currently available. Rural tourism in Hőgyész also includes fishing, hunting and horse riding; guesthouses are available for visitors. If you have a specific activity in mind, confirm its current availability with the provider beforehand.
Getting There and Planning Your Visit

The town is also accessible by train; Hőgyész shares its railway station with the village of Szakály, 3 km away. Check the current timetable before travelling by train. The Liechtenstein Castle in Hőgyész is currently not in operation and is for sale. If you would like to include it in your plans, check its current status before your trip.
