The 470-meter running track by Lake Vár, a memorial trail, and an annual theater festival give Kisvárda a variety of reasons to visit. When planning your stay, it is worth distinguishing between the memorial site, the castle—which is currently not open to visitors—and the specific festival dates.

Culture and Remembrance in Kisvárda

The Bódi László “Cipő” Memorial Walk on Mátyás király utca commemorates singer and songwriter Bódi László, who had many connections to Kisvárda. The permanent memorial trail was established on October 14, 2023. Its theme adds a personal, biographical dimension alongside the city’s architectural and theater history.

Kisvárda Castle has been part of Hungary’s National Heritage since 1990 and is an outstanding architectural and historical monument. It is currently not open to visitors because of renovation work. This distinction is important when planning your stay: the castle’s significance can be appreciated, but a visit is not currently possible.

Exercise and the Theater Festival

A 470-meter Rekortan-surfaced running track runs around Lake Vár. This makes it a clearly defined, short opportunity to exercise. You can plan to run the 470-meter stretch.

The Határon Túli Magyar Színházak Fesztivál, the Festival of Hungarian Theaters Beyond the Borders, was first held in Kisvárda in 1989 and has taken place there every year since. Around 40 productions are shown during the ten festival days, most of them at Művészetek Háza. Other venues include Várszínpad and Kamaraterem; Kamaraterem opened for the festival in 2002. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates before arranging your stay.

More Things to Explore in the Wider Destination of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg

Those who look beyond Kisvárda to the wider destination of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg will find other cultural and landscape highlights. The Vay-Ádám Museum Collection of the Hungarian National Museum is housed in the Renaissance Vay Castle in Vaja. Báthori Castle in Nyírbátor has a permanent exhibition and a panopticon depicting members of the Báthori family in a setting characteristic of their era. The Hungarian section of the Medieval Churches Route in the north connects 37 churches across the church landscape of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg.

The region also has its own architectural highlights: Andrássy Castle in Tiszadob was built between 1880 and 1885 in the French Gothic style. Former prime minister Andrássy Gyula commissioned its construction based on plans by Alpár Ignác. The Bátorliget Primeval Swamp offers a different perspective: this approximately 53-hectare, strictly protected area preserves, particularly fully, different stages in the vegetation and landscape history of the Alföld Plain. These regional highlights complement Kisvárda’s urban, memorial, and theater themes without prescribing a fixed itinerary.
