Ibrány brings together two distinct topics: a squash court that must be booked in advance and an archaeological find dating from the 10th to 11th century. This brings sporting activity together with a tangible historical connection to the town.

Sport and Archaeology in Ibrány

The Ibrány Sports Centre has a squash court. Use of the court requires an appointment to be arranged in advance. If you would like to include squash in your stay, make sure to arrange a time beforehand. Use of the court is therefore subject to an advance booking.

A total of 269 graves dating from the 10th to 11th century were found at Ibrány-Esbó-halom. The find gives Ibrány a tangible historical connection. The graves and the squash court represent two very different interests: a sporting activity that requires an appointment and an archaeological link to the town’s early history.

Culture across the wider Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg destination

The wider Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg destination also offers distinctive cultural attractions. The Vay-Ádám Museum Collection of the Hungarian National Museum is housed in the Renaissance-style Vay Castle in Vaja. The Báthori Castle in Nyírbátor is home to a permanent exhibition and a historical wax museum. The wax museum portrays members of the Báthori family in a period setting.

These places offer different points of interest: in Vaja, the focus is on the museum collection in a Renaissance castle; in Nyírbátor, on the portrayal of the Báthori family in a historical setting. Another perspective is offered by the northern Hungarian section of the Medieval Churches Route. It connects 37 churches in the medieval church landscape of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg. In this way, individual castle and collection attractions are set alongside an entire church landscape.

The construction history of Andrássy Castle in Tiszadob can also be dated precisely: the castle was built between 1880 and 1885 in the French Gothic style by former prime minister Andrássy Gyula, to plans by Alpár Ignác. The construction period, style and people involved give this example a different historical focus from the collections and portrayals in Vaja and Nyírbátor.

Nature across the wider Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg destination

The wider destination’s natural landscapes range from marshes to forests and open areas. The Bátorliget Primeval Marsh covers about 53 hectares and is strictly protected. It preserves the different stages in the vegetation and landscape history of the Great Hungarian Plain particularly well. Nyíres-tó and Báb tava near Csaroda are distinctive peat bogs whose formation dates back to the Ice Age.

The Cégénydányád Park Nature Reserve currently covers 14.28 hectares. A different landscape can be found in the 1,000-hectare nature reserve near Tiszadob, with its oxbow lakes, floodplain forests and grassland. The Tölgyes Forest is home to a large heron colony where 80 to 90 pairs nest. These examples differ both in size and in the landscape features mentioned.

The 77-hectare Vaja Reservoir is also located near Vaja. It is fed by the Vaja Main Ditch and is used for fishing and irrigation. Alongside protected marshes, forests and grasslands, this adds a reservoir and its stated uses to the natural attractions.
