The watermill is one of the main attractions in Túristvándi. Inside, an exhibition focuses on its history and how it works; a memorial plaque offers a biographical perspective on the history of the town.

The watermill: history and how it works

The exhibition covers both the mill’s history and how it works, bringing historical context and a technical explanation together. If you would like to visit the watermill, check the current visitor information in advance.

Memorial plaque and water tour

A memorial plaque in Túristvándi recalls that the writer Móricz Zsigmond spent several years of his childhood in the local blacksmith’s house. This adds a personal memory to the mill’s history: the writer’s childhood years connect him to the town.

For 2026, the tour operator listed dates for a one-day water tour on the Öreg-Túr. The tour runs from Kölcse to Túristvándi, covering 14 river kilometres. Check current availability before planning your tour. As a one-day route, it is a different kind of day out from the cultural attractions in the town itself.

More sides of the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg destination

The wider Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg destination also offers a variety of cultural and historical highlights. The Renaissance Vay Castle in Vaja houses the Vay-Ádám Museum Collection of the Hungarian National Museum. The Báthori Castle in Nyírbátor has a permanent exhibition and a panopticon in which members of the Báthori family are depicted in period settings. Andrássy Castle in Tiszadob was built between 1880 and 1885 in the French Gothic style by former Prime Minister Andrássy Gyula, to plans by Alpár Ignác. These three examples differ in their collections and exhibition themes, as well as in the construction history of the castle in Tiszadob.

The region’s landscapes offer different highlights. The Bátorliget Virgin Bog covers about 53 hectares, is strictly protected, and preserves the different stages of vegetation and landscape history of the Great Hungarian Plain particularly well. Near Tiszadob, a nature reserve includes oxbow lakes, floodplain forests and grassland. A large heron colony of 80 to 90 pairs is found in Tölgyes Forest. Near Csaroda are Nyíres-tó and Báb tava, distinctive peat bogs whose history dates back to the Ice Age. The natural attractions are quite distinct: the Bátorliget Virgin Bog represents preserved stages of landscape history, the area near Tiszadob offers varied habitats and a heron colony, and the bogs near Csaroda date back to the Ice Age.

Water in the region also serves different purposes: the 77-hectare Vaja Water Reservoir near Vaja is fed by the Vaja Main Ditch and is suitable for fishing and irrigation. Another cultural highlight is the Route of Medieval Churches. Its northern Hungarian section connects 37 churches in the medieval ecclesiastical landscape of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg.
