Kisbárapáti offers different ways to experience nature and culture: an extensive network of trails, Bári-tó for walking and fishing, a Baroque church and a memorial to those who died in both world wars. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these highlights separately. The trail network offers a wider range of ways to get around, the lake combines walking and fishing, while the church and memorial each offer their own cultural focus. This lets you tailor your stay to the balance of activity, natural surroundings and local history that you are looking for.
The Mocsoládi-erdő natural area
The part of the Mocsoládi-erdő located in Kisbárapáti covers 912.26 hectares, or 31.78 percent of the municipality’s area. The Mocsoládi-erdő special conservation area covers 2,586.05 hectares. The first figure describes the part of the forest within Kisbárapáti; the second refers to the conservation area as a whole—two different geographical scales.
The Mocsoládi-erdő includes Illyrian beech forests and Illyrian hornbeam-oak forests. Species of community importance found in the area include the alpine longhorn beetle (Rosalia alpina), the European stag beetle (Lucanus cervus), the scarlet fire beetle (Cucujus cinnaberinus) and the barbastelle bat (Barbastella barbastellus). Alongside the size of the conservation area, the nature theme therefore encompasses specific habitat types and species.
Trails for different activities
The Koppányvölgyi túraút trail network passes through Kisbárapáti, stretches for almost 100 kilometres and includes designated rest areas and viewpoints. The network can be explored on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. Its length describes the network as a whole and does not automatically indicate the distance of a single day’s hike. When planning your own outing, you can first consider how you would like to get around and how far you want to go.
The Völgy kör route also passes through Kisbárapáti. So, in addition to the larger network, there is another named route to guide your search for a suitable activity. You can consider the two trail options separately: the total length and modes of travel are known for the Koppányvölgyi túraút network, while the specific point of reference for the Völgy kör route is that it passes through the village.
Bári-tó: walking and fishing
The approximately 3.5-hectare Bári-tó lies in scenic surroundings off the road between Kisbárapáti and Fiad, about one kilometre from the road. The peaceful setting makes the lake a pleasant place for an easy walk. Bári-tó therefore offers a different focus from the extensive trail network: here, the emphasis is on one particular spot and a walk in its surroundings.
Fishing at Bári-tó is permitted daily from 7 am to 9 pm with a day ticket. Fish species that can be caught there include carp, grass carp, Prussian carp, various whitefish, catfish, black bass, zander and pike. If you plan to fish, check the fishing regulations and permitted species locally before your visit.
The church and local remembrance
The Nagy Szent Teréz-templom is a Roman Catholic church of historic significance, built in the Baroque style around 1778. The altarpieces were created by Dorfmeister, and the dome is decorated with frescoes by Franz Xaver Bucher. The construction period and style provide an architectural-historical reference, while the altarpieces and dome frescoes add specific artistic highlights.
Another aspect of the local culture is the memorial to those who died in the First and Second World Wars. Built of brick, the memorial is shaped like a gateway and bears a plaque with the names of local people who died in the wars. The church and memorial thus represent different aspects of local history: Baroque architecture and art on the one hand, and remembrance of those who died in war on the other.
