Balatonendréd can be explored through two distinct interests: the history of Endréd bobbin lace and the village’s architectural history on the one hand, and nature on the outskirts on the other. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus on crafts and architecture or also make time for the Csipkebokor nature trail. The village’s points of interest offer several specific ways to get started, without prescribing a set order.

Bobbin Lace and Exhibition

The village’s first bobbin-lace course began in Balatonendréd in 1908. It was organised by Kájel Endre, the Reformed pastor at the time. Since then, the village’s name has been associated with bobbin lace; Endrédi vert csipke has been made in Balatonendréd since 1908. The course and the lace-making are thus part of a local craft tradition that can be explored both through a specific event and through the ongoing work of making lace.

An exhibition that opened in 2022 brings together several topics: the history of Endréd bobbin lace, works by folk woodcarver Huszár László, and Sipos János’s coin collection. Crafts, woodcarving and coins offer different ways to explore the village’s history. If you would like to include the exhibition in your stay, check in advance what visiting options are available.

Churches, Art and Local History

The churches also tell the story of different periods of construction. The Roman Catholic church was built in 1744; a wall of the Turkish fortress was used for its west wall. The Reformed church was built around 1790 on the hillside behind the Reformed parsonage. The first date is precise, while the second is approximate: together, the construction dates provide a timeframe for two different church buildings in Balatonendréd.

Another part of the village’s history is associated with a statue of Mary. It was erected in the village centre in 1897 and later moved to the garden of the Catholic church. Its original location and its later site thus mark two different stages in its history. There is also a cross and double-cross artwork on the northern outskirts of the village. It adds another local artwork to the themes of church and craft.

Nature on the Outskirts

The eight-kilometre Csipkebokor nature trail starts on the outskirts of Balatonendréd and passes through the surrounding countryside. At its stated length, it offers a distinct nature-focused part of a stay, clearly different in pace from exploring individual buildings or artworks. Check the current trail conditions and access before setting out.

Choosing between these focuses is straightforward: the bobbin lace, exhibition and churches lead into the village’s cultural and architectural history, while the trail offers a different outdoor experience. You can then decide whether to devote your stay mainly to these local cultural attractions or also make time for the nature route.
