An estimated 400-year-old linden tree, the history of church construction and the wooded Pokol torka gorge give Felsőmocsolád several specific attractions for visitors. The village’s history stretches from its first documented mention to precisely dated renovations; nature highlights include a spring, a stream and a hiking trail that passes through the village. There is also a place for cyclists to rest in the village centre. This allows you to explore cultural history and nature as separate points of interest.

The Ancient Linden and Early Village History

The Ancient Linden is around 400 years old; its age is based on an estimate passed down over time. In 2012, it won the “Tree of the Year” competition, taking first place with 11,158 votes. This natural monument combines an estimated long lifespan with a competition win dated to a specific year. The linden is no more than a ten-minute walk from the castle. This is an approximate walking time and may vary depending on route conditions.

The village’s early history can also be traced to specific dates: Felsőmocsolád was first mentioned in a document in 1229 under the name Muchula. The village existed as a settlement in the Árpád era, before the Mongol invasion. The documented mention and its placement in this early period provide two distinct chronological reference points for the village’s history.

Churches and Architectural History

The Munkás Szent József Church in Felsőmocsolád was created by converting a castle built in 1790. Its tower was added in 1955. The Kacskovics–Bánó Castle is also connected with the year 1790: the ensemble, which includes several historic buildings, features a manor house commissioned by Derenkai Erőss József in 1790.

The Reformed Church of Felsőmocsolád is classified as late Baroque and was expanded in 1821. Its architectural history therefore brings together several different features: the conversion and later tower addition are defining dates for the Munkás Szent József Church, while the Reformed Church is notable for its stylistic classification and expansion. These details provide different points of reference when exploring the churches and the castle ensemble.

Forest, Water and Hiking

The “Mocsoládi-erdő” Natura 2000 site extends into the municipal area of Felsőmocsolád, where 29.52 hectares of the site are located. According to the 2021 management plan, this area represents 1.14 percent of the protected site’s total area and 1.79 percent of the municipality’s area. The figures show both the site’s share of the Natura 2000 area and its extent within the municipal boundaries.

Pokol torka is a distinctive natural feature in the forest: a deep ravine, or loess gorge, with a small stream. A spring now trickles quietly in its cleft. Another water source is Malom-árok, which is rich in water and flows towards Felsőmocsolád.

The National Blue Trail passes through Felsőmocsolád. Alongside the named natural features, this makes a hiking route with a direct connection to the village part of the local itinerary. When planning your time, you can distinguish this route from the individual landscape features: the trail passes through the village, while Pokol torka and Malom-árok each have their own distinctive natural characteristics.

Exhibition Space and a Break in the Village Centre

The village centre is home to an exhibition space with an interactive escape room game. The renovated exhibition building is easily accessible to wheelchair users and visitors with strollers; check current access options before your visit. If you are planning to visit the exhibition space, check the latest opening hours and booking options in advance.

A 100 m² promenade in the village centre offers cyclists a place to rest. It adds a specific resting spot for a cycling trip to the cultural and natural attractions. The exhibition space, promenade, and local architectural and natural features therefore appeal to different interests, without prescribing a set itinerary.
