Szenta combines a strong connection to nature with two locally protected church buildings. The landscape’s focal point is Lake Baláta, a 174-hectare area on the border between Szenta and Kaszópuszta, which has been protected since 1942. This makes the moorland and architectural heritage two clearly distinct themes to consider when planning your trip.
Lake Baláta and the Moorland
Lake Baláta is a waterless, marshy primeval bog, now surrounded by swamp forests and the remnant of a larger lake. Its rich birdlife, along with its diverse reptile and amphibian fauna, extends the focus on nature beyond the landscape itself. Those interested in wetlands and their wildlife will find a clear focus here for exploring the natural surroundings of Szenta.
Near Szenta, by Baláta between Kaszó and Szenta, is the Dr. Marián Miklós sétány. The approximately 600-metre-long nature trail runs along a boardwalk over the moor meadow, offering views of the bog’s living environment while protecting the natural features it presents. Its manageable length and boardwalk provide a concrete, clearly defined way to explore the moorland.
Protected Church Buildings in Szenta
There is also a cultural focus in the town itself: the Roman Catholic church building and the Reformed church building are each under local protection. This protection is documented in the municipal ordinance. Together, the two churches form a distinct architectural theme alongside the moorland. If you would like to combine nature and cultural heritage, you can consider both aspects when planning without treating them as a single excursion destination.
Routes and a Special Way to Arrive
A route description last updated in 2016 lists a circular route of approximately 50 kilometres, starting and ending in Csurgó. It passes through Csurgónagymarton, Ágneslak, Iharosberény, Kanizsaberek, Kaszó, Lake Baláta and Szenta. This makes Szenta a stop on a longer circular route, while the start and finish are in Csurgó. Check the route and conditions before making current plans.
As a special option, the Kaszói Állami Erdei Vasút offers a special trip to Szenta by individual arrangement. Arrange the trip directly with the operator and factor it into your plans as a separately arranged option.
Regional Natural Setting
In the wider South Balaton destination, the Zselici Tájvédelmi Körzet adds a distinct regional focus. In 2009, the area received the International Dark Sky Park title because of its low light pollution; the Zselici Csillagpark was established in the heart of the protected area. This adds a regional nature connection to Szenta’s moorland and church profile, broadening the focus to the wider destination.
Find a Holiday Rental to Suit Your Travel Interests
When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to decide on your main focus first: will your trip centre on Szenta, Lake Baláta and the protected churches, or would you also like to include the regional dark-sky park in South Balaton? Compare specific offers with the destinations you actually plan to visit.
