The József Attila Memorial House, Központi Beach and cycling infrastructure on two streets show how varied a stay in Balatonszárszó can be: literary history, a seasonal program of performances, the waterfront and practical information for cyclists are all part of the picture. When planning a trip, you can first decide whether culture, the beach or cycling will be your main focus; the market offers another way to discover local produce.
József Attila and cultural venues
The József Attila Memorial House is open year-round and features an interactive exhibition. It is located in the former Horváth Inn, where Attila József spent his final weeks in November and December 1937. The building has housed an exhibition about the poet’s life since 1957. The Memorial House therefore connects a specific historic site with an exploration of his life. Check visiting arrangements before you travel.
The Csukás Theater offers a different cultural perspective. Opened in 2011, the theater presents performances for families, children and adults, as well as concerts. Since 2020, it has been a venue for the Kultkikötő program series. While the Memorial House is open year-round, the theater program changes seasonally. If you are planning to attend a performance, check the dates for your travel period.
Another memorial can be found beside the main entrance to the Balatonszárszó Reformed Church: a plaque there commemorates the 1943 Szárszó Conference. Alongside the Memorial House’s focus on literary history, this offers a specific connection to the history of the conference.
Központi Beach: Cove and Swimming Area
Központi Beach has a shallow natural cove with a preserved stretch of sandy shoreline. The swimming area gradually gets deeper. The cove and the shape of the swimming area are two distinct features of the beach: one describes the shape of the shoreline, the other the water depth. Water and operating conditions depend on the season; take this into account when planning your visit.
Cycling and infrastructure
As part of the development of the Balatoni Bringakör, an on-road cycle lane was created on Jókai Mór Street. A cyclists’ rest stop was also established along the same street. On Mikszáth Kálmán Street, road markings were added, along with traffic guidance information and KRESZ road signs. The measures described therefore differ by street and function: the cycle lane and rest stop are on Jókai Mór Street, while the markings and signs are on Mikszáth Kálmán Street. As road layouts and signs may change, follow the current route signage before setting out on a specific ride.
Market and produce
At the Balatonszárszó Market, producers sell fresh vegetables, fruit, homemade specialties and handcrafted goods directly to visitors. Conversations and tastings are also part of the experience. The market complements the cultural and beach attractions by offering a direct connection to the products and the people who sell them. The selection and participating vendors may change; check what is currently available before visiting.
