A stay in Nagymaros can have different focuses: you can start with the history of the church and the town, or with the free beach, the farmers’ market or paths on Calvary Hill. The specific features of the riverbank, historical dates and event schedules each offer different pointers for planning.

Church and Local History

Construction of the Roman Catholic church in Nagymaros began sometime in the first half of the 14th century. Its tower is the only medieval ecclesiastical monument in the Danube Bend that has survived to this day. A relief depicting a bunch of grapes is set into the northeastern base; it is said to date from Roman times. The church thus brings together two distinct periods: a medieval start to construction and the relief’s only presumed Roman origins.

The Calvary Chapel and the Stations were built in 1773. The Calvary steps were created in the 1920s with donations from local families. The dates therefore distinguish the construction of the chapel and Stations from the later creation of the steps.

The Tájház offers another way to explore local history, presenting the life of the Swabians who came to Nagymaros. The display uses household objects and a furnished home with old furniture and tools. While the church and Calvary Chapel focus on religious buildings, the Tájház is about everyday life and objects for daily use.

The landscape also has a historical dimension: the sweet chestnut forest planted in the 14th century was one of Nagymaros’s attractions.

Beach and Water

The free beach stretches along a 200-metre section. The shore is pebbly and sandy, and muddy in places, so it is not uniformly sandy throughout. The beach has several places to eat, an ice cream parlour, a playground, toilets, showers and a self-service bicycle repair station. The facilities described therefore include both food and play and bathroom facilities.

If you’d like to combine your time by the water with an activity on it, BTZ operates a kayak, canoe and boat rental service in Nagymaros. Rental availability can change, so check in advance whether the type of boat you want is available.

Market and Events

At the Nagymarosi Termelői Piac, producers sell meat, vegetables, mushrooms and homemade dairy products. There are also fruit juices and syrups, pastries, freshly baked bread and sweet yeast cakes. The selection therefore ranges from food for a meal to baked goods and sweets. The market adds a focus on local produce to the beach and historical sites.

The Nagymaros Catholic Youth Meeting has been held every year in May and October in the parish garden for around half a century. The Misztrál Festival is also held annually. In good weather, the Misztrál ensemble performs outdoors in the church garden on the Szabados György stage. The planning details therefore differ in schedule and conditions: May and October are specified for the youth meeting, while the ensemble’s outdoor performance depends on good weather. Check the specific event dates before your trip.

Walks and Trails Nearby

The path up Calvary Hill leads over 167 steps to a pleasant walk through the cool forest. The number of steps provides a specific point of reference for this route; the forest stretch describes what follows the climb.

Another route leads from Nagymaros railway station to Remete Cave nearby. The marked hiking trail follows the yellow trail markers as well as Panoráma út and Kittenberger út. This gives you two different descriptions to help plan your route: the climb up Calvary Hill followed by a walk in the woods, and the route to the nearby cave.
