At the northern tip of Szentendre Island, the Danube divides; Kisoroszi lies here. Nature, village history and a range of experiences give the place different facets. When planning your trip, it is worth first considering whether you want to focus mainly on the protected landscape, the village’s history or a particular activity.
SzigetcsĂşcs: Danube Panorama and Protected Nature
From Kisoroszi Szigetcsúcs, you can look out over the Danube, with the Visegrád Mountains beyond it and the Börzsöny mountain range on the opposite bank. Szigetcsúcs lies within Duna-Ipoly National Park. Its animal and plant life is protected under Natura 2000; the area is also designated a nature reserve of national importance. Here, a striking view of the river landscape meets a special protected status.
The area is a floodplain forest of willows and poplars. Among the overmature trees, there is a risk from trees that may topple and dry branches that may fall. If you plan to visit SzigetcsĂşcs, you should take this warning into account when making your decision. There is also a waterside campsite at SzigetcsĂşcs, where tents can be pitched beneath shady willows and poplars. The natural area and campsite thus share the same striking landscape, while the risk posed by the trees remains an important practical consideration.
Village History in a Collection, Studio and Churches
The Kisoroszi Local History Collection focuses on the village’s past, folk culture and everyday life. It displays objects dating from the 19th century to the mid-20th century. The focus is therefore not on a single event, but on life in the village over a longer period.
The Ujváry-Ignác Studio offers a different perspective. Ujváry Ignác had it built specifically for his artistic work on the banks of the Danube in 1898. Its original condition has been preserved, with large windows, an easel, furniture and paintings on the walls. Kisoroszi’s Reformed Church adds to this view of the village’s history: it was built in 1803 in the Neo-Baroque style. The Roman Catholic church is Late Baroque; it was consecrated in October 1719 and dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. The two churches highlight different periods and architectural styles.
Fairy-Tale Trail, Golf and Seasonal Dining
The DunakanyargĂł MeseĂşt is an outdoor experience trail with eight stations. At the fairy-tale houses, visitors can read stories about the Danube, water or the particular location. Each station has a related game, task or question to prompt discussion, inspired by the story. This makes the trail an interactive discovery.
The Magyar Golf Club Kisoroszi offers a very different activity: an 18-hole course, Par 72, and Hungary’s oldest 18-hole course. The historic Hungarian Old Course has natural dunes and undulating fairways reminiscent of famous English links courses. Thus, an eight-station storytelling trail and a golf course with a clearly defined format sit side by side as very different options for planning your trip.
Szigetcsúcs Terasz is a seasonal food and drink venue on the banks of the Danube near the campsite. It serves handmade hamburgers, hot dogs and lángos. As the season and menu may change, check the latest information if you want to make a stop there part of your plans.
Plan Your Ferry Crossing and Stay
A timetable is available for the ferry connection between Kisoroszi and Visegrád-Szentgyörgypuszta. Departure times and fares may change, so check the timetable if the crossing is part of your plans. This lets you consider the local highlights—river scenery, history, the fairy-tale trail or golf—alongside the practical details of your stay, without assuming that all activities need to fit into the same day.
