If you would like to combine cultural and architectural history with nature, Zsámbék offers several places to start: from the ruins of the Premonstratensian church to the Józsefvárosi pinceterület, as well as cultural collections and a shady resting place in the center. The sites and activities focus on different things, so you can choose according to your interests.

Church Ruins and Monastic History

The ruins of the Premonstratensian church are the remains of a 13th-century church. Its three-aisled basilica was built in the late Romanesque and early Gothic styles. Its age and architectural classification give you two different points of reference if you are interested in church architecture.

The ruins of the former monastery are located directly beside the church. They contain a stone collection that visitors can view. The church, monastery remains and stone collection are thus closely connected spatially: the collection is not in the basilica, but in the adjoining monastery grounds.

Józsefvárosi pinceterület: Winemaking, Nature and Remembrance

The Józsefvárosi pinceterület preserves the memory of the winemaking traditions of the German population who lived in Zsámbék until their forced relocation. At the same time, the area is both a protected monument and a nature reserve. Cultural history and nature are distinct, explicitly named aspects of the same area.

A signposted nature trail is for visitors interested in the local flora and fauna, as well as cultural heritage. If you would like to explore the area’s different themes, the trail offers a clearly marked way to discover both nature and culture. It brings these themes together without limiting them to the history of winemaking.

The Szent Vendel domborműves népi lakóház offers another perspective on local history. The collection displays painted Swabian furniture, clothing and household items. It provides insights into Swabian folk art, as well as the former way of life and symbolism of Zsámbék. So, alongside the history of winemaking, it also highlights everyday objects and their cultural significance.

Other Churches and a Place to Rest in the Center

The church in Zsámbék, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, was built between 1749 and 1754. The Pestis Kápolna offers a different point of interest: the Baroque chapel is located on Angyal-árok, on the outskirts of Zsámbék. Both buildings complement the medieval Premonstratensian church with other examples of religious architecture, but differ in their dates and locations.

The Immaculata Memorial is Baroque and richly decorated. It commemorates 828 victims of the 1739 plague epidemic. The date and number give the monument a specific connection to local history; unlike the churches, it is explicitly dedicated to remembering the victims.

If you would like to plan a place to rest alongside your cultural visits, Zárdakert is a shady resting place in the center of Zsámbék. Its features include a pond, a fountain and small paths. Rather than highlighting a single monument, its description presents a peaceful place with several features.

Performances, Exhibitions and Activities

For four decades, the Zsámbéki Nyári Színház has offered summer cultural experiences featuring theater, music and artists. The Bonzsák Kocsiszín Galéria is a cultural venue for regular exhibitions and visual arts programs. The Zsámbéki Zsöllyekert opened as a new cultural venue in Zsámbék during the 2023 Whitsun festival.

Two other activities have specific requirements: you can visit the local history fire service exhibition by appointment made by phone; arrange your appointment before your visit. At the Driving Camp in Zsámbék, visitors can go-karting on a special track. Check the operator’s information for current availability.
