Ecser brings together Slovak cultural life, local customs and tangible traces of its history. One particularly distinctive custom is the symbolic washing in the Szerelem stream on Good Friday. According to local folk belief, residents go to the stream that runs through the village every year. The ritual is intended to preserve health, youth and beauty for the coming year. It links a specific place with a fixed day in the Christian calendar and a handed-down belief about the year ahead.
Customs and cultural life
The Ecseri Tájház serves Slovak cultural life in Ecser and displays a collection of objects relating to the area's past. The house rules from 2012 also provided for community programmes. Visits were to be arranged in advance with representatives of the Ecseri Szlovák Önkormányzat or members of the board of the Ecseri Zöldkoszorú Hagyományőrző Kör. As this regulation dates from 2012, check before visiting whether and through whom visits are arranged today.
Dance and clothing also offer different insights into local culture. In the mid-19th century, Ecser stood out from the surrounding villages for its rich, elaborate folk costume. The national dance work “Ecseri lakodalmas” was choreographed by Miklós Rábai and inspired by wedding customs in Ecser. Historical costume and the choreographic interpretation of local wedding customs thus represent two distinct forms of cultural expression.
Church and memorial sites
The Roman Catholic church in Ecser is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua. Its single-nave structure with a tower was built from 1735 onwards on the site of an older chapel, in the Baroque style. The church site thus connects the earlier chapel with the construction of the later church. Single-nave means that the church has one nave.
In the centre of Ecser, a memorial to residents who died in the Second World War stands in HĹ‘sök park beside the church. A stone cross is located at the intersection of Kálvária utca and Szent Imra utca. Szlifka András and his wife, Csaja Julianna, had it erected in 1932. The cross at the lower end of ZrĂnyi utca dates from 1908. The two crosses differ in location and in the historical details recorded for each: the donors of the first are known, while the year it was erected is known for the second.
Different points of reference matter when planning your time: the custom at the Szerelem stream takes place on Good Friday, while visiting the Tájház requires advance registration. The church, crosses and memorial offer insights into local history through buildings and memorials. You can explore Ecser's cultural highlights according to your interests without combining them into a single programme.
