Isaszeg offers several distinct themes to consider when planning a trip: protected landscape, a marked hiking route to a monument, and historic buildings and memorial sites. The Tőzeges fishing lake is located between Isaszeg and Gödöllő, adding another activity to the mix. Depending on your interests, you can focus your stay more on nature, fishing or local history.
Landscape and hiking trail
A substantial part of the Gödöllő Hills Landscape Protection Area extends across the municipality of Isaszeg. This gives the town a direct connection to the protected hilly landscape; churches, a residential house and memorial sites offer other perspectives on local history.
A hiking trail marked with a red cross leads from Isaszeg railway station to the Honvéd Memorial. This gives you a named starting point and a clear destination for planning your route. Check the trail markings on site before setting off, as they can change.
Fishing at Tőzeges
The Tőzeges fishing lake system is located on the Rákos Stream between Gödöllő and Isaszeg. The system, which consists of several lakes, covers 6.9 hectares and offers year-round fishing opportunities. This makes it a different focus from the hiking route to the Honvéd Memorial: here, fishing takes centre stage, while the marked trail leads to a historic destination. You can choose based on the interest you want to shape your stay around.
Architectural history and archaeology
The old, listed Szent Márton Church dates back to the 12th century. The Isaszeg Slovak Country House represents a different architectural and functional history: it is a traditional three-part house with rammed-earth walls. It was used as a residence until 1993; since then, it has served as a Slovak country house museum.
Archaeological finds are also part of local history. At the local museum, you can explore some of the finds unearthed within the municipality. This brings several different themes together: religious architecture, a former residence and archaeological artefacts.
Memorial site and event
The Katonapallag memorial site contains Hungarian mass graves beneath three obelisks erected in 1907. Opposite stands the tomb of the imperial soldiers. Katonapallag thus offers a distinct historical focus alongside the architectural history of the church and country house museum: here, graves and monuments take centre stage. The dates span a considerable period: the church dates back to the 12th century, while the obelisks were erected in 1907.
The Isaszeg Historical Days are a series of events with a history spanning several decades. Outdoor activities include, among others, a torchlight procession, military and folk-culture demonstrations, a ToborzĂł (recruitment programme), a dance house, a hussar camp, a military parade, a battle reenactment, a wreath-laying ceremony, a Polish-Hungarian friendship gathering and a history competition. Dates and programme details may vary from year to year; check the latest event information for your travel dates.
