Budajenő brings together cultural history and village life: the Magtár is a late Baroque monument and community space, while the church, Stations of the Cross, cemetery, and wine-cellar row each mark different historical traces. The market and village festival also provide specific dates to plan around.

The Magtár and open-air exhibition

Budajenő’s Magtár is a late Baroque, heritage-listed building that serves as a multifunctional community space. This building brings together historic heritage and present-day community use. Nearby are a boat installation commemorating the Ulmer Schachtel and a settler house. The open-air exhibition honors the community’s ethnic past. This part of Budajenő thus connects its architectural history with a commemoration of the community’s history.

Church, Stations of the Cross, and local history

The Szent Mihály Öregtemplom was built in the 14th century in the Gothic style. It was probably erected on the remains of a 12th-century church. The Stations of the Cross leading to the church were laid out in the 17th century by P. Jakab Miksa. They comprise six double stations, each with two niches; the chapel may be considered a seventh double station. This cautious interpretation of the older church differs from the dating of the later church building.

The Ó-temető, which developed in the 18th and 19th centuries, lies near the church. The area’s history thus stretches from a supposed predecessor church through the Gothic building and the Stations of the Cross to the later burial ground. The differing dates make the long development of Budajenő’s religious heritage easy to follow.

Wine culture and village events

Another historical trace can be found on Kossuth Lajos utca. The Pincesor, a row of wine cellars that preserves memories of the village’s wine culture, developed there in the 19th century. It complements the architectural history of the church with a different cultural connection: the local wine tradition.

At the end of June, Budajenő celebrates a búcsú festival for Saints Peter and Paul and a village day featuring a festive program and a lively fair. In addition, the Kisköz Association runs a market every two weeks with support from the municipality. These represent two different event schedules: the regular market and the festival held at a specific time in June. If you would like to plan for both during your stay, check the exact dates in advance: the festival is held at the end of June, while the market follows a two-week schedule, and the dates do not automatically coincide.

When looking for a hotel in Budajenő, you can first decide whether to focus your trip mainly on local history or on a specific event date. If the market or festival is important to your plans, check the current dates before booking or travelling.
