Felsőpetény brings together the history of a Protestant church and Almásy Castle with guided tours in a former clay mine. Architectural history, remembrance and mining thus sit side by side. When planning a stay, you can first decide whether to focus on local history or also on the distinct cultural and natural themes of the wider destination of Neuburg.
Church, Castle and Remembrance
The Protestant church in Felsőpetény was built in 1784. The former Almásy Castle stands outside the village and was built in 1902. The castle once housed a children’s home. The church and the castle therefore offer different historical points of reference: one dates from the 18th century, the other from the early 20th century.
A memorial plaque on the wall of Almásy Castle commemorates Mindszenty József, Cardinal and Archbishop of Esztergom, who was held under house arrest there. A Mindszenty memorial day is held at the castle every October. At a memorial service on 27 October 2013, the commemoration began with a bishop’s mass at Munkás Szent József Church. Participants then went to Almásy Castle and, after speeches, laid wreaths at the memorial plaques for Mindszenty József and Pálinkás-Pallavicini Antal. If you plan to attend, check the specific date and program for the year in question.
Guided Tours in the Former Clay Mine
A 2026 report describes guided tours through the preserved, original-condition tunnels of the former Mesélő Föld clay mine in Felsőpetény. The features described include mine carts, machinery and traces of mining. During the tour described, the headlamps are switched off and the walls are illuminated exclusively with ultraviolet light. If you plan to make a tour a fixed part of your itinerary, check in advance whether it is running at the time of your trip.
Culture and Landscape in the Wider Destination of Neuburg
The wider destination of Neuburg also offers distinct cultural and natural themes. The old village of Hollókő is a Palóc settlement in Nógrád County in northern Hungary and a carefully preserved, living example of rural life before the 20th-century agricultural revolution. It offers a cultural focus different from Felsőpetény’s architectural and commemorative history.
Several permanent exhibitions explore literary history: the Madách Imre Memorial House in Csesztve presents the history of the Madách family, focusing on Az ember tragédiája. The permanent literary history exhibition at the Mikszáth Kálmán Memorial Museum in Horpács is titled “MIKSZÁTH.” The permanent and temporary exhibitions of the Pásztó Museum are housed in a Baroque Cistercian monastery building rebuilt in 1717–1718. The museum also presents a medieval glassworks and blacksmith’s workshop as an open-air exhibition and as a unique industrial heritage monument in Hungary.
Geology offers another focus: the Boszorkány-kő educational trail is located in the Karancs-Medves Landscape Protection Area, established in 1989, which currently covers 6,928.6 hectares. It illustrates basalt volcanism from 2.4 to 5.2 million years ago. The rock formations shown from a small fissure volcano include sediment inclusions torn from the depths, curved lava slabs and basalt columns formed by weathering. The themes of the wider destination of Neuburg therefore range from literature and rural culture to geological landforms.
