Szirák offers a cultural and historical focus with clearly distinct themes: an Evangelical church, a former aristocratic residence and a Teleki burial chapel. The dates 1784 and 1788 provide a specific chronological reference. Those who consider the broader context can also explore the wider Neuburg destination and its themes of village history, literature, museums and geology.

Church, Castle and Teleki Burial Chapel

The Evangelical Church in Szirák was completed in 1788. Teleki-Degenfeld Castle is a listed building and a former aristocratic residence. The two buildings have different points of emphasis: the church’s completion date provides a specific chronological reference, while the castle’s listed status and former role as a residence shape its historical context.

The burial chapel of the Teleki comital family was built in 1784 in the cemetery in Szirák. It is a late Baroque building with a rectangular floor plan. Inside is an epitaph made of red Tardos limestone. Its inscription is engraved in Hungarian and Latin and gilded. This combines a description of the building’s form with precise details about its material and lettering.

The dates are four years apart: 1784 marks the construction of the burial chapel, and 1788 the completion of the church. This allows two different historic buildings in Szirák to be placed side by side chronologically. The burial chapel is also identified as late Baroque; for the church, the focus is on its year of completion.

More themes in the wider Neuburg destination

Beyond Szirák, the wider Neuburg destination offers other cultural, historical and natural-history highlights. The old village of Hollókő is a Palóc settlement in Nógrád County in northern Hungary and a consciously preserved, living example of rural life before the 20th-century agricultural revolution. At the Madách Imre Memorial House in Csesztve, the permanent exhibition on the history of the Madách family focuses on The Tragedy of Man. Village history and literature thus offer two distinct themes to consider when choosing further travel interests.

The Pásztó Museum presents another aspect of the region’s cultural history. Its permanent and temporary exhibitions are housed in a Baroque Cistercian monastery building that was rebuilt in 1717–1718. The museum also presents a medieval glassworks and blacksmith’s workshop as an open-air exhibition and as an industrial heritage monument unique in Hungary. Here, the history of a monastery building sits alongside the presentation of former craft and production sites.

Geology is also part of the wider Neuburg destination’s range of themes. The Boszorkány-kő geological trail is located in the Karancs-Medves Landscape Protection Area, which was established in 1989 and currently covers 6,928.6 hectares. The trail illustrates basalt volcanism from 2.4 to 5.2 million years ago. It features rocks from a small fissure volcano, including sediment inclusions torn up from the depths, curved lava plates and basalt columns formed by weathering. This focus is distinctly different from the architectural and literary themes.
