Pásztó reveals itself through its buildings and their different functions: the monastery, burgher's house and mill represent different historical layers. There is also art at the Csohány Kálmán Gallery and a different focal point in the district of Mátrakeresztes.

Historic Buildings in Pásztó

The former Cistercian monastery in Pásztó was built between 1715 and 1720 using the foundations of the medieval monastery. The building houses the local history museum and a memorial room for Rajeczky Benjámin, the last prior of Pásztó and a musicologist known throughout Europe. The building's history and commemorative culture come together here in one place.

The Scola magister, also called Oskolamester háza, is Hungary's only surviving burgher's house in a market town. A document mentions it as early as 1428. The Catholic church in Hasznos adds a 15th-century building to the picture; Hasznos is a district belonging to Pásztó. The church's buttressed choir also dates from this period.

Mill, Museum and Art

The permanent exhibition at the Szalay Mill covers the mill's almost thousand-year history and its importance as a key site in medieval Pásztó's trading centre. Restored and made operational in 2021, the Szalay watermill welcomes visitors. Check the current visitor arrangements before your trip.

The Csohány Kálmán Gallery presents the artist's life and graphic and ceramic works. Csohány Kálmán was a distinguished son of the town and a two-time Munkácsy Prize winner. The rooms each have a different focus: the first displays works directly connected to his birthplace, while the second features his graphic series.

The open-air exhibition sites also tell the story of Pásztó. The medieval ruins of the Cistercian church, the glassworks and the smithy near Oskolamester háza have been turned into open-air exhibition sites. The smithy is considered a unique industrial heritage monument in Hungary.

Hiking Trails and Woodcraft in Mátrakeresztes

Mátrakeresztes belongs to Pásztó and is known for its microclimate and beautiful hiking trails. The district is also associated with the handmade and machine production of wooden spoons, an activity rooted in its proximity to the forest. Thus, alongside buildings and museums, trails and local craft offer distinct interests in their own right. Before setting out on a hike, it is a good idea to check current trail conditions. The wider travel destination of Neuburg offers further cultural and landscape highlights: the old village of Hollókő is a Palóc settlement in Nógrád County and a consciously preserved, living example of rural life before the 20th-century agricultural revolution. The Boszorkány-kő geological trail lies within the Karancs-Medves Landscape Protection Area, established in 1989; it illustrates basalt volcanism from 2.4 to 5.2 million years ago and showcases the varied rocks of a small fissure volcano: sediment inclusions torn from the depths, curved lava slabs and basalt columns formed by weathering.
