Kozárd can be explored from two perspectives: geology and village culture. At the Pogányvári quarry, volcanic features and sedimentary rocks take centre stage; in the village, the chapel, bell tower and rebuilt Kohut Manor are the main historical points of interest. When planning a stay, these offer two themes to focus on according to your personal interests.

Geology and Protected Area

The Kelet-Cserhát Landscape Protection Area extends into the administrative area of Kozárd; it was placed under protection in 1989. An interpretation site has been established at the Pogányvári quarry in Kozárd, bringing together Natura 2000 themes and geology, particularly volcanology. Visitors can learn about Miocene volcanic features and sedimentary rocks there. The quarry’s themes thus range from its role as an interpretation site to specific questions about the history of the Earth.

The Kozárd Formation is a marine, brackish deposit between the Badenian volcanites and the Pannonian freshwater formations. It is rich in organic remains and occasionally contains redeposited, silicified tree trunks. The formation’s type section was exposed in a ditch near the cemetery; the ditch runs parallel to the eastern side of the road from Kozárd to Alsótold. The geological description thus links the deposit’s classification with a specifically named outcrop site.

Building History and Sacred Art

The House of Natural Values visitor centre (Természeti Értékek Háza) was created from the rebuilt Kohut Manor by 2023. The Chapel of the Immaculate Conception (Szeplőtelen-Fogantatás-Kápolna) also has its own building history: it was built of wood, added to the Faluház in 2006 and crowned with a glass pyramid. The chapel is associated with seven sacred altar paintings and fourteen large Stations of the Cross paintings by the artist János Szurcsik. Kozárd’s Classicist bell tower dates from 1830 and is a protected monument. Together, these buildings offer different starting points for exploring village history, architecture and religious art.

Tours and Dining

The Kozárd–Ecseg route is offered as a hiking, cycling and horseback riding tour. Before setting out, check the current route and conditions so your plans suit your chosen mode of transport. Kozárdi Kamra is on Rákóczi út, the first street on the southern side of the village, and also offers restaurant services. It opened in 2023; check what is currently on offer before your visit.

In the wider destination of Neuburg

The wider destination of Neuburg includes other distinct cultural attractions. The old village of Hollókő is a Palóc settlement in Nógrád County in northern Hungary and a deliberately preserved, living example of rural life before the 20th-century agricultural revolution. The permanent and temporary exhibitions of the Pásztó Museum are housed in a Baroque Cistercian monastery building rebuilt in 1717–1718. An open-air exhibition there features a medieval glassworks and blacksmith’s workshop, a unique industrial heritage monument in Hungary. These examples broaden the perspective on Neuburg to include Palóc rural life and medieval craft techniques.
