The “Gerecse 50” hiking event, climbing anchors in disused quarries and the Fekete Lajos Memorial House showcase different sides of Tardos: outdoor activity, climbing and the history of science. A nearby educational trail adds another option. The wider Komorn-Gran destination also offers its own landscape and cultural themes.

Hiking, Climbing and Local History in Tardos

The popular “Gerecse 50” hiking event also passes through Tardos. Details may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your stay around the event, check the information for your preferred date.

Climbers will find established climbing anchors in disused quarries in Tardos. Check current access options and climbing conditions before your visit.

The Fekete Lajos Memorial House is located in the birthplace of Fekete Lajos. He was a historian, archivist, Turkologist, palaeographer and university professor, and received the Kossuth Prize. These professional fields link history and archival work with Turkology and palaeography; the latter is the study of old scripts. This adds a history-of-science perspective to Tardos’s nature and outdoor activity themes.

The Malom-völgyi educational trail runs near the lake, in the surrounding area. The route is about 1.5 kilometres long and has eight stops. Its length makes it a manageable outing; check local trail information before setting out.

Komorn-Gran: Nature and Culture in the Wider Region

The wider Komorn-Gran destination offers further landscape and cultural themes. The Gerecsei Tájvédelmi Körzet is a nationally significant, officially designated landscape protection area in Komárom-Esztergom, covering 8,676 hectares. Triassic limestone predominates in the Gerecse; Jurassic limestone is also found there and is particularly rich in fossils. The region’s natural appeal therefore encompasses both the area’s protected status and its geology.

The wider Komorn-Gran destination also offers the Majki Kamalduli Remeteség, a Baroque monument complex. It includes seventeen cell houses, a church tower and a monastery. An exhibition covers the general and Hungarian history of the Camaldolese order. The complex is open Tuesday to Sunday: from 1 April to 31 October, 10:00 to 18:00; from 1 November to 31 March, 09:00 to 17:00. Opening hours may change, so check them again before your visit. Another cultural highlight in the wider Komorn-Gran destination: while the exhibition at Majk explores the history of the Camaldolese order, the interactive permanent archaeological exhibition at the Brigetio Öröksége Látogatóközpont displays finds from excavations at Brigetio.
