A Neoclassical parish church, a sculptural group dated to 1783 and a viewpoint overlooking Piliscsév give Leányvár clear cultural and scenic highlights. If you are considering what you would like your trip to focus on, you can choose between architecture, local cultural heritage and a sweeping view here.
Church and Calvary in Leányvár
The Árpád-házi-Szent-Erzsébet Parish Church is a Neoclassical, listed church. It was built in 1806. The Calvary sculptural group is dated to 1783, giving these two architectural and artistic works distinct points in time from which to explore Leányvár’s history.
The sculptural group is located along a path on the hill above the gardens on Kálvária Street. A small chapel is also located along a path on the hill above the gardens on Kálvária Street. The chapel adds to the local points of interest, without requiring a visit inside. The parish church and the Calvary, with its sculptures and chapel, are therefore the main cultural attractions.
Views towards Piliscsév
At the upper end of Panoráma Road, the viewpoint opens up to a sweeping 180° view towards Piliscsév. This offers a different emphasis from the historic attractions: here the focus is on the view, while the church and sculptural group offer a historical perspective. This lets you discover Leányvár through specific local points of interest without arranging them into a fixed itinerary.
Nature and orientation in the wider Komárom-Esztergom destination
The wider Komárom-Esztergom destination offers its own regional context. This includes the Gerecsei Tájvédelmi Körzet, a nationally significant, individually designated landscape protection area in Komárom-Esztergom, covering 8,676 hectares. The geology of the Gerecse is another point of interest: Triassic limestone predominates; Jurassic limestone is also present and is particularly rich in fossils.
For regional orientation, 19 virtual walks in Hungarian, German, English and Slovak are available to download in the Duna-Gerecse Tourism Area. They work offline; as the app’s availability may change, it is advisable to check before your trip that it is still available to download. Regional tourism information also suggests a cycling route along the Által-ér, which provides a simple and safe connection between Tata, Vértesszőlős and Tatabánya.
Museums and historic sites in the region
The Majki Kamalduli Remeteség is a Baroque monument complex with seventeen hermit houses, a church tower and a monastery. An exhibition covers the general and Hungarian history of the Camaldolese Order. The Remeteség is open Tuesday to Sunday: from 10:00 to 18:00 between 1 April and 31 October, and from 09:00 to 17:00 between 1 November and 31 March. Check the opening hours again before your visit.
For archaeology, the Brigetio Öröksége Látogatóközpont offers an interactive permanent exhibition of finds from the Brigetio excavations. The Monostori Erőd offers a different historical focus: it is a military monument in the fortification system of Komárom. Exhibitions and staged scenes illustrate the eras of the Monarchy, the world wars and the Soviet occupation. The fortification system of Komárom is located within the territories of both Komároms and is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
