The history of church construction, religiously stamped bricks, and nearby Lake Tisza shape the themes you can discover in Tiszaszentimre. The churches take you through different historical periods; at the lake, water sports and fishing are the main attractions.

Churches and Bricks: Historical Layers

In 1772, the Reformed congregation demolished the original Catholic church and rebuilt its church within two years. During reconstruction, it used some bricks from the Catholic church. The present-day Catholic church was built in 1935. Together, these details offer a glimpse into different chapters of local church history: the demolition of the original Catholic church, its reconstruction by the Reformed congregation, and the later construction of the present-day Catholic church.

A collection of religiously stamped bricks is also part of the Reformed church’s historical significance: 200 such bricks were discovered there. Their stamps are associated with Jewish, Roman Catholic, Greek Catholic, Lutheran, and Reformed traditions. For anyone interested in traces of different faith traditions, this offers another local point of interest alongside the stories of the buildings.

A municipal renovation project also included the Szent Imre Roman Catholic Church. It envisaged using the church for cultural events and religiously themed concerts. This describes the intended use as part of the project, not a current events calendar.

The Lake and Play Areas

Nearby Lake Tisza offers opportunities for water sports and fishing. A themed playground and a recreation park with new play equipment were created at Hősök tere in Tiszaszentimre. These are two distinct leisure options: activities at the lake and a landscaped play and recreation area in the village. If the park is important to your visit, check the current condition of the facilities in advance.

Wider Region: Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok

The Tiszakürt Arboretum is located in the wider travel region of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok. Since 2001, it has been a nature reserve of national importance and is also of national botanical significance. More than 1,000 plant species and varieties are represented there. The Öregkert area has a 3.5-kilometer network of signposted walking trails. This nature and walking option is part of the regional context and adds a distinct focus to the local church and lake themes.

Another cultural highlight in the wider travel region of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok is the Kiss Pál Museum in Tiszafüred, one of Hungary’s oldest rural museums. It is housed in a Neoclassical manor house built by the Lipcsey family in the first half of the 19th century. Two permanent exhibitions cover Tiszafüred’s approximately 7,000-year archaeological past and its ethnography, including outstanding objects from the 17th and 18th centuries. If you include this regional museum in your travel plans, check the exhibition details before your trip.
