The 444-metre-long Tiszavirág Bridge is a striking link between Szolnok’s riverside areas and a cycling route through the city. It is a pedestrian bridge and is considered the longest pedestrian bridge in Central Europe. On the approximately eight-kilometre cycling route, it is also used as a pedestrian and bicycle bridge.

Cycling through Szolnok

The route follows the urban stretches of the Zagyva and the Tisza. It runs along roads and riverside promenades and through parks before crossing the Tiszavirág pedestrian and bicycle bridge. This provides a practical way to connect riverside areas and parts of the city on a single loop. The stated distance is approximately eight kilometres; check the route before setting out, as paths may change locally.

A former synagogue as an exhibition venue

The Gallery of Szolnok is also located on the banks of the Tisza. The building was formerly a synagogue and has served as an exhibition venue since 1972. Szolnok therefore offers two distinct interests side by side: a cycling route through urban riverside areas and a cultural venue with a clear history of use.

In the wider destination of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok

Lake Tisza, in the northern part of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, serves as a tourist centre. The lake and its surroundings are among the region’s outstanding areas for cycle tourism; the international EuroVelo II cycle route also runs along the Tisza through Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok. These are regional points of reference alongside the specific urban route in Szolnok.

Another nature attraction in the wider destination of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok is the Tiszakürt Arboretum. It is of botanical significance at national level, has been a nature reserve of national importance since 2001, and is home to more than 1,000 plant species and varieties. It is also a refuge for native flora and fauna. In the Öregkert area, there is a signposted network of paths, 3.5 kilometres long, for walking.

Museums and regional traditions

In the wider destination of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, the Kiss-Pál Museum in Tiszafüred is one of Hungary’s oldest rural museums. It is housed in a Neoclassical manor house built by the Lipcsey family in the first half of the 19th century. Two permanent exhibitions focus on Tiszafüred’s archaeological past, spanning around 7,000 years, and folk-art objects from the 17th and 18th centuries. The museum also includes the Nyúzó-Gáspár Pottery House, where exhibits document the locally popular pottery craft of the past and the original living environment. Check exhibition details before your trip.

In the wider destination of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, cherry growing in Nagykörű has a history stretching back nearly 200 years. The Nagykörű cherry differs from the Germersdorfer varieties in both tree and fruit. Hungary’s largest contiguous cherry-growing area is in Nagykörű, as is the country’s largest collection of cherry varieties, with more than 100 varieties. The annual Cherry Festival is the town’s biggest event. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the festival dates in advance.
