An altarpiece from 1862 and a Mesolithic hunting hut mark very different periods in Jásztelek. There is also a protected area with rare bird species, an artificial oxbow lake and the Tájház, housed in a residential building dating from the mid-19th century. This allows travellers to combine architectural and local history with nature, rather than focusing on just one kind of discovery. In the wider destination of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, the Tisza-tó in the northern part of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County is a tourist hub. The lake and its surroundings are among the region’s outstanding areas for cycling tourism. The Tiszakürt Arboretum in the same wider destination is of national botanical importance and is home to more than 1,000 plant species and varieties.

Church and Architectural History

The present-day Roman Catholic church was built in 1765, after the older chapel had been demolished. The main altar features a painting of Saint Martin, painted by Antal Peski in 1862. The church at Erzsébet tér is oriented east–west, an alignment considered characteristic of medieval church architecture. Its east–west orientation allows it to be compared with medieval church architecture; the present-day church itself was built in 1765.

The Tájház in Jásztelek offers a different architectural perspective. It is housed in a residential building dating from the mid-19th century. Thus, alongside the church, there is a historic home with its own architectural history. The two buildings offer different ways to explore the architectural history of the town.

Archaeological Traces

The archaeological history also reaches far back. During excavations on the outskirts of Jásztelek, a hunting hut measuring 5.20 metres in diameter was discovered in a Mesolithic layer. The hunting hut probably dates from around 7000 BC.

Protected Area and Oxbow Lake

Protected plants and rare bird species can be found in the protected area. To find it, leave Jásztelek heading south and turn at the junction for Pusztamizse; a carved wooden sign marks the area. Check the road conditions before setting out.

An artificial oxbow lake is about 3 kilometres long and covers around 9 hectares.

Practical Information

On the outskirts of Jásztelek, the Havas-Boldogasszony Chapel stands amid fields, trees and shrubs. A 2025 media description reports that it is in very poor condition. As its condition may change, check its state and access arrangements before visiting in person.

Jásztelek can be reached by car or bus via Route 32 between Jászberény and Alattyán. If you are travelling by bus, check the timetable for your travel date. Permitted fishing methods are intended to preserve the natural environment; check the current regulations before fishing.
