Rózsaszentmárton keeps its mining past alive at several named sites. Alongside more than 200 cellars in Tarcód and Nagyvölgy, a rose garden and distinctive types of bread, these create a local profile that brings industrial history together with other local features.
Location and character
Rózsaszentmárton lies at the foot of Somlyó-hegy, in the valley of the Ágói patak stream. This setting describes the landscape around the village; it provides a different point of reference for your choice than the sites specifically commemorating the mining past. Landscape and industrial history are two distinct aspects that help define Rózsaszentmárton.
Mining history at several sites
The Lignitbányászati Emlékház preserves the memory of Rózsaszentmárton’s mining past. In addition to a mining exhibition, it houses a collection of photographs and rooms furnished as a classroom, a shoemaker’s workshop and a pharmacy. The history of mining is thus presented alongside furnished spaces related to education, crafts and the provision of medicines. Visits to the Emlékház must be arranged in advance.
The entrance to the József lejtősakna is another reminder of the village’s mining past. On the outskirts of the village, the E-303 bucket-wheel excavator is another memorial site. These three examples each offer a different perspective: the Emlékház brings together an exhibition, photographs and furnished rooms, while the mine entrance and excavator stand as tangible evidence of the area’s mining history. Visitors interested in this subject will find it represented in Rózsaszentmárton not only in an exhibition.
Cellars and local tastes
There are more than 200 cellars in the Tarcód and Nagyvölgy areas, dug by the ancestors. Their distribution across two named areas sets this part of the village’s profile apart from the individual mining memorial sites. Their number and traditional origins give the cellars a distinctive place in local history.
The local culinary scene includes rózsai rózsás kenyér and szendvicskenyér, which are among the area’s distinctive treats. This adds typical local breads as another point of interest alongside the landscape and mining heritage.
The Rózsakert
The Rózsakert is home to 1,200 rose plants. As a garden, it offers a different focus from the cellar complexes and mining memorial sites. It is therefore a distinct, clearly quantifiable point of interest when choosing between local attractions.
The wider region: Heves
In the wider destination of Heves, the Hevesi Füves Puszták Landscape Protection Area lies in the southern part of Heves County. It was designated in 1993 and, following expansions in 2005 and 2008, reached its present area of 16,114 hectares. This regional protected-area scale differs from the specific sites in Rózsaszentmárton and offers another landscape focus within the destination of Heves.
The wider destination of Heves also includes the 6.5 km-long Ilona-völgyi nature trail along the Ilona stream. It passes geological features of the eastern Mátra Mountains and traces of former ore mining. This adds another combination of landscape and mining history to the range of themes: in Rózsaszentmárton, the Emlékház, mine entrance and excavator recall the village’s mining past; the trail in Heves brings together geological features and traces of historic ore mining.
