Hatvan brings together several different ways to explore: museum visits, a wildlife park in the heart of the city and an outdoor swimming pool open only during the summer season. When planning your visit, it is therefore worth first deciding whether to focus on culture, wildlife or a summer day at the pool. There is also a local beer tasting and Hatvan’s role as a railway junction.
Museums and Industrial History in Hatvan
The Széchenyi Zsigmond Kárpát-medencei Magyar Vadászati Múzeum presents its exhibitions across three floors. Its themes bring together natural science and hunting, alongside fishing, angling and the history of the castle. This range combines natural history with various aspects of hunting and cultural history. The displays may be updated.
The Hatvany Lajos Múzeum is housed in the former Sörház building, considered one of Hatvan’s significant architectural landmarks. The building gives a museum visit its own architectural point of interest. If you plan to visit, check the current visitor information, as access may change.
The Hatvani Cukorgyár Emlékháza commemorates the sugar factory, which operated from 1889 to 2003. At the time of the change of political system, it was one of the twelve sugar factories operating in Hungary. The Emlékháza can be visited by prior arrangement. The three cultural attractions therefore differ both in their subject matter and in how visits need to be planned.
Wildlife and a Summer Bath
The Hatvani Vadaspark is in the city centre, on Szúnyog-sziget. It features large game species that may be hunted in Hungary, as well as native animal species; the mix of species may change. The wildlife park adds a different focus to Hatvan’s attractions than the museums: animals, rather than exhibitions, are at the centre of the experience.
The Hatvani Strandfürdő is in Újhatvan, in a natural, park-like setting, and welcomes visitors during the summer season. Its warm-water pool has underwater jets and neck massage jets. Its seasonal offering clearly distinguishes it from the year-round cultural attractions; for specific plans for a day at the pool, check the latest visitor information.
Local Life and Getting Around
The area around Hatvan’s main square can be explored by bicycle. This is a different way to discover the city from exploring it through its museums. Hatvan is also a railway junction where three main railway lines meet. This makes an activity around the main square and the city’s role in the rail network two distinct points of reference.
The Serfőzde also adds to the mix of local attractions: visitors can sample beer brewed on site. As operations may change, check in advance whether tastings are available when you plan to visit. Together with the museums, Vadaspark and seasonal outdoor pool, it offers a choice of culture, wildlife, activity and regional flavours, although not all of these experiences have the same visitor arrangements.
In the wider destination of Heves
The wider destination of Heves also has natural and cultural landscapes with their own distinctive themes. The Hevesi Füves Puszták Protected Landscape Area lies in the southern part of Heves County. It was designated in 1993 and, following expansions in 2005 and 2008, reached its present area of 16,114 hectares.
The 6.5 km Ilona Valley nature trail along the Ilona stream passes geological features of the Eastern Mátra Mountains and traces of earlier ore mining. The Pély-Ludas nature trail has a different focus: it introduces the grassland habitats of the Hevesi Plain, including saline grasslands, marshes, bodies of water, scrub, semi-natural woodland and forests, as well as their wildlife and the European roller population. The two trails therefore differ in the landscapes and natural features they describe.
The Heves County section of the Országos Kéktúra includes an ascent of Kékestető, Hungary’s highest point. In winter, visitors can enjoy winter sports at Kékestető. This regional setting thus brings together a hiking route and a seasonal winter-sports attraction, while Hatvan’s outdoor pool is geared towards the summer season.
Heves’s cultural highlights also include the Szépasszony Valley, home to Eger’s largest continuous wine-cellar area. Wine culture and the gastronomy associated with it are among the area’s major tourist attractions. Another cultural reference is Hevesi szőttes, a textile heritage from Heves County associated with Heves, Mátraderecske and Bodony.
