Pilgrimage and commemorative culture shape the themes that make Ecséd an interesting place to stay: in Szentkút-völgye, the Boldogasszony Chapel is a prominent stop on the Mária Út; in the town, monuments commemorate various historical events. These two focal points offer different perspectives on Ecséd—religious tradition and public remembrance. The broader regional setting of the overarching destination of Heves County also encompasses distinctive nature and culture themes.
Pilgrimage in Szentkút-völgye
Since 2007, the Boldogasszony Chapel in Szentkút-völgye near Ecséd has been a prominent stop on the Mária Út pilgrimage route. On the outskirts of Ecséd, the foundation also organizes the Motoros Búcsú every May, a pilgrimage for cyclists and motorcyclists at the Szentkút-völgye pilgrimage site. Dates and programs vary. If you plan your trip around this event, check the details of the relevant edition in advance.
Monuments and historical connections
The Katona Monument was unveiled in 1937. Residents of Ecséd erected it using public donations in memory of the soldiers who fell in the World War. The Huszár Statue bears a different dedication: it was ceremonially unveiled on March 15, 2019, in memory of the Revolution and War of Independence of 1848–49. The statue stands in a park in front of the Ecséd municipal hall, at 139 Szabadság utca.
The Trianon Monument features a striking symbol: a Holy Crown broken into six pieces. The crown rests on a supporting pillar, commemorates the losses resulting from the peace diktat signed in 1920, and also expresses the unity of Hungarians. The 1956 Monument uses a figurative depiction: a woman climbs onto a barricade, holding a perforated Hungarian flag. This flag was made and assembled from three blocks of granite in different colors. The distinct motifs and forms give each monument its own historical significance.
Gedeon Richter is also connected to a specific place in Ecséd. The walls of the gymnasium at Ecsédi Richter Gedeon Primary School preserve traces of his birthplace. The school is at 141 Szabadság utca. The school’s history and the monuments thus complement the pilgrimage tradition with further local themes, without repeating the same historical connections.
Heves County: a regional setting of nature and culture
The Hevesi Füves Puszták Landscape Protection Area lies in the southern part of Heves County, within the broader destination of Heves County. It covers 16,114 hectares and was designated in 1993; following expansions in 2005 and 2008, it reached its present extent. The 6.5-kilometer Ilona Valley nature trail offers a different perspective on the landscape. It passes geological features of the Eastern Mátra Mountains and evidence of former ore mining. The region’s thematic landscape thus includes both a large protected area and a nature trail focused on geology and mining history.
Other themes in the broader destination of Heves County range from cultural landscapes to regional crafts. The Szépasszony Valley encompasses Eger’s largest contiguous area of wine cellars; wine culture and its associated gastronomy are among the area’s major tourist attractions. Hevesi szőttes is a textile heritage from Heves County, associated with Heves, Mátraderecske, and Bodony.
Nature trails and outdoor activities also add to this regional setting. The Pély-Ludas nature trail provides information about the grassland habitats of the Hevesi Plain, including saline grasslands, marshes, bodies of water, scrubland, semi-natural woodlands and forests, as well as their wildlife and the European roller population. Heves County counts the Mátra-Bükk tourist region among its priority areas. The section of the Országos Kéktúra in the county includes the climb to Kékestető, Hungary’s highest point; in winter, visitors who enjoy outdoor activities can take part in winter sports there.
