Hajdúszoboszló combines a diverse range of water attractions with cultural sites and opportunities for exercise in Szabadidő Park. When planning your stay, it is worth first choosing what you want to focus on: water, local history or outdoor activities.
Water Attractions at Aqua-Palace
Aqua-Palace is directly connected to the city’s thermal bath and beach bath. Its indoor facilities include water-jet massages, massage jets, spring pools, a current channel and a bubble bed. There is also a red family slide in the tropical pool and a large green spiral slide. The different pools and slides give the water area several distinct focal points. Aqua-Palace’s surf building also houses a conference room for 180 people, which serves as an event venue.
Exercise and Relaxation in Szabadidő Park
Szabadidő Park brings together facilities for a range of activities. The cycling track is more than 160 metres long, and the roller-skating track is just under 400 metres. At 800 metres, the synthetic running track is longer than both. A modern playground with a climbing castle and climbing wall adds to the options for children. You can also go for a walk or have a picnic in the park-like, tree-planted grounds. This means you can explore the park through its tracks and play facilities, or enjoy quieter time outdoors.
City History and Architecture
The exhibition “The Heritage of Hajdúszoboszló” explores three themes in the city’s history: its medieval roots, the heritage of the Hajdú people and more recent history. St. Ladislaus Church offers further glimpses into the past. The Roman Catholic church was built in the Baroque style in 1776; its interior frescoes were created by church painter István Takács in the 1930s. Another cultural landmark is Harangház. It houses and displays the bell heritage donated to the city by Oborzil, and stands in the park between the thermal bath and the city’s main street. The exhibition, church and bell house each offer a distinct perspective: city history, Baroque architecture with later interior painting, and a heritage donated to the city. The Trianon Memorial adds another perspective: unveiled on 4 June 2020, it symbolizes the indivisibility of the Hungarian nation.
Hajdú-Bihar: Regional Nature and Culture
In the wider Hajdú-Bihar destination, the Hortobágyi Nemzeti Park – the Puszta World Heritage Site offers a different sense of scale. It covers nearly 75,000 hectares in the Great Hungarian Plain in eastern Hungary. As a cultural landscape, it preserves visible evidence of more than 2,000 years of traditional pastoralism. Another natural attraction in the wider Hajdú-Bihar destination is the Hortobágyi-halastó nature trail: for walks, you can choose routes of 3.6, 5.4 or 10 kilometres, with no difficult sections. The Hortobágyi-halastó pond system is a Ramsar site, an Important Bird Area, part of the World Heritage Site and a Natura 2000 site. Alongside Hajdúszoboszló’s water attractions, cultural sites and park activities, the wider Hajdú-Bihar destination also offers distinctive natural and cultural landscapes.
