A protected railway station building dating from 1920, painted gallery panels and a memorial cross point to different chapters of Ebes’s local history. Parks add green spaces and facilities for day-trippers to these cultural landmarks. You can tailor your stay to your interests, balancing history, art and time outdoors.

History and Art in Ebes

The Görbe-Balogh manor house was built in the Neoclassical style in 1922 and now houses a seniors’ club. The railway station building is also a notable historical landmark: it was built in 1920, remains visible today and is a protected monument. Its preservation status and architectural history offer a reason to explore the town’s architectural heritage.

In the Reformed Church, the painted panels on the gallery depict biblical scenes and Reformed symbols. They were created by the painter Buka László. This specific combination of images and religious symbols sets this artistic landmark apart from the town’s historic buildings. Those interested in local art and architectural history will find a range of subjects here, spanning more than a single period.

In Szent-István Park, the municipality erected a wooden cross on 18 August 2011 at the initiative of local residents. It commemorates the destruction of the medieval village in 1594. The time separating the event from the memorial is part of the history of this place of remembrance and helps explain the cross’s commemorative purpose.

Parks and Time Outdoors

Nagy Park has play equipment, a large lawn and a fire pit for day-trippers. Ebes also has two playgrounds with play equipment. Alongside historical and artistic attractions, these facilities offer places to spend time outdoors. Facilities may change; if particular play equipment is important to your plans, check what is currently available before your visit.

If you are also considering other attractions in the wider HajdĂş-Bihar destination, you can assess each one according to its own location and focus.

HajdĂş-Bihar: Puszta, Nature and Regional Attractions

In the wider Hajdú-Bihar destination, the Hortobágyi Nemzeti Park – the Puszta World Heritage property covers nearly 75,000 hectares of the Great Hungarian Plain in eastern Hungary. This cultural landscape preserves visible evidence of more than 2,000 years of traditional pastoralism. The Hortobágyi-halastó fishpond system carries several protected designations: it is a Ramsar site, an Important Bird Area, part of the World Heritage property and a Natura 2000 site.

At the Hortobágyi-halastó nature trail, you can choose from three route lengths: 3.6, 5.4 or 10 kilometres. None of the described routes has any difficult sections. The main difference between the options is therefore the distance on foot; no walking times are provided for these lengths. The Hortobágy Wildlife Park offers a different focus: it showcases animals of the original Hungarian Puszta, including wolves, Przewalski’s horses, vultures and pelicans. You can also book a guided Land Rover safari to see wild horses and aurochs. Check the booking conditions before making plans.

The crane migration is a recurring natural spectacle in Hortobágy. Around 1,500 visitors watch the cranes at feeding sites during the day and at their roosting sites at sunset; the number may vary by season. An approximately 90-minute carriage ride through the Hortobágyi Puszta introduces visitors to the area’s natural and cultural history and pastoral traditions. As schedules may change, check departure times in advance.

For a cultural experience, the Shepherds’ Museum showcases the lives of shepherds, along with handmade clothing, tools and decorated personal items. It is housed in a former carriage house that was part of the Hortobágyi Csárda complex. Another kind of regional attraction is Hungarospa in Hajdúszoboszló: it is open year-round from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and has three indoor thermal pools and four outdoor pools. Its certified medicinal water is used for medically supervised treatments supported by health insurance. Opening hours and available facilities may change; check them before your visit.
