Debrecen offers different ways to enjoy culture and green spaces: collections, cinema and the city’s history sit alongside park trails, a botanical garden and interactive science experiences. This mix is a helpful starting point when choosing a hotel. Consider which themes you would like to focus on during your stay and whether you are looking for culture, time outdoors or both.
Museums, film and the city’s history
The Déri Museum in Debrecen brings together an extensive local history collection and Frigyes Déri’s collection on universal cultural history. This offers a perspective ranging from local history to cultural history on a broader scale. Apolló Cinema, Debrecen’s oldest cinema, offers a different focus: Throughout the year, it regularly hosts themed screenings, film festivals and premieres. If you are interested in film, you can check the current programme in advance.
The main street, Piac utca, is also part of the city’s cultural history. For centuries, it was the setting for Debrecen’s famous fairs. Its historical role adds another perspective on Debrecen alongside the museum collections and film programme.
Green spaces, trails and outdoor events
Nagyerdei Park offers several ways to spend time outdoors: winding paths invite you to explore the forest, while the promenades are ideal for walking or cycling. There are also opportunities for outdoor exercise. In the middle of the park, among tall Scots pines and oaks, is the Nagyerdei SzabadtĂ©ri SzĂnpad open-air theatre. From spring to autumn, it hosts theatre performances, concerts and music productions. Check the current programme before your visit.
The Botanical Garden of the University of Debrecen has its own history: it was established in 1928 behind the main campus building, after the original garden belonging to the Reformed College had been demolished. In the wider destination area, the Zsuzsi Forest Railway also travels through the Erdőspuszták landscape, which lies northeast of Debrecen. If you plan to take this ride, check the latest operating information in advance.
Interactive science and themed attractions
The Agora Science Center explores everyday scientific phenomena through more than 30 interactive games and impressive experiments. There is also an observatory on the top floor of the futuristic three-storey building. From there, you can observe the sun, planets and other celestial bodies. The offerings range from interactive activities to stargazing.
Nagyerdei Park also has other attractions, including the Water Tower Adventure Center. The Sziget-kék theme park opened in July 2022 beneath the shady trees of Nagyerdő, on the site of the Ötholdas Pagony playground. These places offer a different focus from the park trails and stage programme, broadening the range of themes to explore in Debrecen.
HajdĂş-Bihar as a wider regional perspective
For a broader regional perspective, Hajdú-Bihar is the wider destination. The Hortobágyi Nemzeti Park – the Puszta World Heritage site covers nearly 75,000 hectares in the Great Hungarian Plain in eastern Hungary. As a cultural landscape, it preserves visible evidence of more than 2,000 years of traditional pastoral farming.
Hortobágyi-halastó includes a pond system with several protected area and World Heritage designations, as well as a nature trail. You can choose from three trail lengths: 3.6, 5.4 or 10 kilometres; there are no difficult sections. Another option in the wider destination of Hajdú-Bihar is Hortobágy Wildlife Park, which offers a bookable Land Rover safari with an expert guide to see wild horses and aurochs.
