Hortobágy brings together an impressive bridge history, herding culture, horse breeding, landscape views and regional cuisine. This offers different perspectives to help you plan your trip: you can explore architectural history, learn about historical herding and horse traditions, or focus on nature and Puszta cuisine. The different themes offer guidance without prescribing a fixed itinerary.

Bridge history and herding culture

The Kilenclyukú híd was built between 1827 and 1833 to designs by Ferenc Povolny, replacing an older wooden bridge. Its Neoclassical style and length of 167.3 metres make it a striking landmark in Hortobágy. Its dimensions give a tangible sense of the bridge, while its construction also tells the story of a change from the earlier wooden structure.

The Pásztormúzeum presents historical memorabilia in a former wagon shelter. This means that both the exhibits and the building's former use are part of the story. Those interested in herding culture will also find an exhibition at the Hortobágyi Csárda about the history of the inn, travel across the Puszta and the people who explored the landscape. It is housed in the Csárda's former guest rooms.

Horse breeding and Puszta cuisine

The grounds of the Mátai Ménes are open year-round free of charge. Check locally before your visit to see whether this has temporarily changed. The history of Máta offers a historical perspective on horse breeding: targeted breeding of the Nonius breed began there in the 1880s. At that time, Máta became a centre for horse breeding and the seat of the city's pasture management. These details give horse breeding a place of its own alongside the themes of architecture and herding culture.

The Hortobágyi Csárda serves traditional herders' cuisine and dishes made with ingredients from the Puszta. These include grey cattle, Racka sheep, guinea fowl, Mangalitza pork and fish; Hungarian pálinka and wine round out the selection. Dining and the exhibition offer different ways to explore the Csárda: one through its cuisine, the other through the history of the inn and its role in travel across the Puszta.

Landscape and exhibitions

At the Hortobágyi Vadaspark, observation towers offer a bird's-eye view of the landscape. This is a different way to experience the Puszta than through its architectural and social history. If you include both themes in your trip, you can treat the landscape views and cultural history as distinct areas of interest without having to combine them into a set itinerary.

Your admission ticket gives you access to the interactive exhibitions “Hortobágy Természete”, “Darvak Világa” and “Pusztai Kincsestár – A jószág haszna”. As ticket arrangements may change, check them before your visit. The three exhibition titles point to different themes: nature, cranes and the benefits of livestock in the Puszta.

Hajdú-Bihar as a wider natural and cultural setting

In the wider destination of Hajdú-Bihar, the Hortobágyi Nemzeti Park – the Puszta World Heritage site covers nearly 75,000 hectares of the Great Hungarian Plain in eastern Hungary. As a cultural landscape, it preserves visible evidence of more than 2,000 years of traditional pastoralism. This broader setting complements the local stories of herding life and horse breeding with the long history of the pastoral landscape.

The Hortobágyi-halastó nature trail is also part of the wider destination of Hajdú-Bihar. Walks are available on routes of 3.6, 5.4 or 10 kilometres; according to the route description, there are no difficult sections. This lets you start by choosing a distance that suits you. Another nature theme in the wider destination is the crane migration in Hortobágy: around 1,500 visitors observe the cranes at feeding sites during the day and at roosting sites at sunset. This visitor number may vary by season.
