Nagycenk brings together Széchenyi heritage sites, a seasonal railway service and a fishing pond on the edge of the village. The castle houses an interactive museum about the family’s history and István Széchenyi’s life and work. The village’s varied attractions also include a sculpture park, a church, a mausoleum and a fire brigade museum. You can plan your stay around a cultural theme or include the fishing pond as another highlight.

Castle and sculpture park

The Széchenyi István Memorial Museum (Széchenyi István Emlékmúzeum) is located in Széchenyi Castle in Nagycenk. Its interactive exhibition is devoted to the Széchenyi family and the life and work of István Széchenyi. The two themes bring family history and the biography of the statesman together in one exhibition.

Opposite the castle is the sculpture park, which is open to visitors free of charge all year round. It features a collection of restored sculptures from wayside crosses, as well as a faithful reconstruction of the Remete Chapel (Remete-kápolna). The original chapel was built by the Széchenyi family at the end of the Lime Tree Avenue (Hársfasor). The park thus brings together reconstructed chapel forms and examples of religious folk art.

Church, mausoleum and fire brigade museum

The three-nave church in Nagycenk is designed in the Romantic style and is an architectural monument. At István Széchenyi’s initiative, it was rebuilt between 1860 and 1864 to plans by Miklós Ybl. Its construction history adds a specific chapter of the 19th century to the sites in Nagycenk associated with the Széchenyi name.

The Széchényi Mausoleum is located in the public cemetery. It is the focal point of a cross-shaped burial complex commemorating the ancestors of the Széchényi family. István Széchenyi is buried there.

The Nagycenk Fire Brigade Museum offers a different perspective on local history. The collection of the local volunteer fire brigade association, dating back around 150 years, includes historic fire engines, motorcycles, specialist equipment, uniforms and memorabilia. Visits are by prior arrangement, so please contact the museum in advance.

Museum railway and fishing pond

The Nagycenk Széchenyi Museum Railway operates seasonally on weekends, public holidays and announced weekdays. The published 2026 season runs from 4 April to 25 October. Before travelling, check the operator’s current timetable to ensure your plans match the season dates.

On the edge of the village is Laposréti Lake, also known as Nagycenki Fishing Lake (Nagycenki Horgásztó), which covers about 1.5 hectares. The pond is used for recreation and fishing and is open to visitors free of charge all year round; fishing may be subject to rules. The opening arrangements therefore differ: the museum railway operates seasonally, while the pond is listed as accessible year-round.

Plan your stay in Nagycenk

Two details are especially important for planning: take the railway season into account and arrange your visit to the fire brigade museum in advance. This will help you plan around the local highlights and their respective visiting arrangements.
