Fertorakos combines an unusual cultural venue with traces of local history and access to the Mithras Sanctuary. In the quarry, cave-like halls, a theater hall and a path to themed viewpoints come together. There is also a mineralogical collection, a local history exhibition with a ceramics workshop, and the beach on Lake Fertő. The specific differences between these places can help you tailor your stay to your interests.

The quarry and paths to special places

The Fertőrákos quarry is associated with cave-like halls that formed over the course of almost two thousand years. As an exhibition and events venue, it has a distinctive atmosphere. The theater hall in the Barlangszínház has special acoustics, while a path through the quarry leads to themed viewpoints where visitors can learn about protected plant and animal species.

The Mithras Sanctuary is another point of interest. A narrow path leads there from Fertőrákos through Fertő-Hanság National Park; you can reach it on foot, by bicycle or by narrow-gauge railway. Unlike the quarry path with its viewpoints, the sanctuary itself is the main attraction here.

Local history: pillory, walls and castle

In the center of Fertőrákos stands Hungary’s only 17th-century pillory still preserved in a public square. Four-meter-high 16th-century walls with embrasures can still be seen on Fő utca. In terms of age, the walls are older: they date from the 16th century, while the pillory dates from the 17th.

The Bishop’s Castle served the bishops of Győr partly as a refuge and partly as a summer residence. It currently needs renovation and is not open to visitors. As its status may change, check before visiting.

Collections, ceramics and the lake

The Ásványmúzeum in Fertőrákos houses a collection of about 2,000 calcite crystals and 400 fossils. The owner guides visitors through the collection, explains how it was formed and answers questions. If a guided tour is important to you, check the current options in advance.

The local history exhibition includes a ceramics workshop in the back courtyard of a typical Rákos house. Visitors can view handmade one-of-a-kind pieces there and buy them in the adjoining shop. This gives the exhibition a different focus from the mineral and fossil collection at the Ásványmúzeum.

Fertőrákos has the only beach on the Hungarian shore of Lake Fertő. If spending time by the water is important when choosing where to stay, the beach is a separate consideration alongside the cultural and natural history attractions. In the wider travel destination of Győr-Moson-Sopron, the Fertő/Neusiedler See Cultural Landscape encompasses wetlands, saline soils, reed beds and shoreline areas. Lake Neusiedl is at the heart of Fertő-Hanság National Park.
